Carrie Stuart Parks, once again, deftly and masterfully weaves an intense tale brimming with suspense and authenticity that begs to be read in one sitting. The author is well-known for her intricately and tightly woven plot that feels like a 5000-piece puzzle systematically snapping into place page by page and this book is classic Carrie Stuart Parks. From reading her previous books, I knew to look out for the villain amongst the many secondary characters introduced during the plot, but I was (yet again) stunned at the ending. I was somewhat surprised at the book’s third person limited point of view since the author’s previous Gwen Marcey series was in first person perspective but it worked well for this book.

Tavish is an heiress since the death of her grandmother, a fledgling artist, and a quirky and impulsive twenty-five year driven by anxiety, fear, somewhat overactive imagination, and compassion. Sawyer is a loyal, compassionate, loving FBI agent who runs into Tavish at a local gallery during one of her art showings. Tavish’s wealthy mother’s art is stolen then returned, Tavish’s fiancé is murdered as well as quite a few others Tavish has known, then Tavish herself is hunted down by a faceless ruthless entity, and Sawyer gets involved in the swirl of conspiracy and secrecy as he tries to protect Tavish. The romance is a small subplot but enough to keep their budding friendship and attraction interesting.

Using Art to Solve Crime: Techniques Used by Forensic Artists

Since 1981, I’ve been a forensic artist—an amazing feat since I’m only . . .um. . . well, younger than that. In those years, I’ve seen some shifts and trends, but some things have never changed. Despite the overwhelming prevalence of computers in almost every other field, they have never been able to replace a trained forensic artist. Artists have an amazing toolbox of techniques we use to gather the information we need to help solve crime.

The pencil. Any forensic artist worth her weight in graphite knows the power of the lowly pencil and a sketchpad. Law enforcement would love a photographic image of the suspect, but all we have to work with is memory…and memory is faulty. The more the image looks perfect, the more imperfect it is for helping to identify a suspect. We want the drawing to just suggest a likeness and eliminate those not similar.
Now that we brought up the subject of memory, a forensic artist needs to understand how memory works. The average witness will remember between four and five facial features. When they describe the person they saw, they will do so from their strongest memory to their weakest memory, from most important to least important. We listen carefully to the order of facial features.
Whole vs Parts. We don’t look at faces as individual parts, although a particularly outstanding nose or Marty Feldman eyes might catch our attention. We will remember the face as a whole, with the proportions of the face an unacknowledged part of that. Forensic artist prefer to use reference photographs where the whole face is viewed.

“Pain danced with regret while loneliness looked on, always the wallflower.”

This is the first book by Kelly Irvin I have read and it hooked me with an intricately woven plot of suspense and action. The story is well-written with twists and turns to the plot, interesting and multi-dimensional primary and secondary characters, and a wonderful theme of grace, forgiveness, and second chances.

The story involves Eli, a detective in the San Antonio PD, and Gabriella, a former assistant prosecutor turned chef. They have a complicated history and a broken engagement between them but must work together when Gabriella’s brother, an ATF agent, goes missing and the family is threatened. As Eli and Gabby dig deeper into Jake’s disappearance and several connected murders, they find themselves in the middle of a dangerous gun smuggling cartel in an environment where they’re not sure who to trust. The romance component is relatively small in the book but does make for a good tense atmosphere for Gabby and Eli as they dodge those who want them to disappear.

The book, though it’s a stand alone novel, actually felt like book 2 in a series because the backstories of the characters either weren’t fully revealed or weren’t revealed until much later in the book. It was slightly disconcerting to feel like I was missing something about the characters while reading, but the intense suspense, intrigue, and mystery was excellent.

Over the Line by Kelly Irvin turns the heat up on suspense with a setting in Laredo, Texas. Here’s a spicy chili to pair with the book while you’re reading.

(adapted from 1979 World’s Fair Chili Recipe)

3 lbs. round steak, chopped
3 lbs. chuck roast, chopped
6 T. vegetable oil
6 T. chili Powder
6 T. cumin
6 garlic cloves minced
2 whole onions, chopped
1 T. oregano
2 T. paprika
2 T. cider vinegar
4 ounces green chilies, diced
14 oz. stewed tomatoes (one can)
1 T. Tabasco sauce
2 T. cornmeal
3 c. beef broth
Pepper to taste
Brown meat in oil. Pepper to taste. Drain oil from meat, add chili pepper, cumin, garlic, and onion. Cook for 30 to 45 minutes. Stir often.
Add oregano, paprika, vinegar, 2 c. broth, green chilies, stewed tomatoes, and Tabasco sauce. Simmer 30 to 45 minutes. Stir often.
Dissolve cornmeal in one cup of beef broth. Pour into chili. Simmer another 30 minutes, stirring often. (Chili is done when meat is tender.)

Serves 8.

Kelly’s Note: My husband loves his chili with saltine crackers. I like Fritos. We all agree that chili should NOT have beans in it. My mom always made homemade cinnamon rolls to have for dessert when she made her chili. Hmmm. That sounds good. I’m off to the kitchen! Enjoy!

This is book 2 in The Legacy of Sunset Cove series and picks up right where the first book, Harbor Secrets, left off. So it’s best to read Harbor Secrets first before reading this book since this book relies on the plot and characters from the first book to build momentum and expand the original plot.

Sunset Cove is a small coastal town in Oregon that is heavily involved in alcohol making and distributing during 1916 Prohibition Era. Anna, the town newspaper’s editor-in-chief, is determined to bring down those who are illegally producing and distributing alcohol, especially when the current mayor and the local police chief’s protege are suspected to be involved. There are multiple subplots, like Anna’s daughter Katy’s dream of becoming an elite dressmaker, Anna’s divorced parents once again drawing closer, as well as romantic interests for both Anna and Katy, in addition to the mystery, suspense, and excitement involving the rum runners. The plot is well-crafted and the author’s writing style is easy to read. If you enjoy historical fiction, you will certainly enjoy this book.

My heartbeat turned sluggish as an ache swelled in the back of my throat. This man—the

person responsible for my brother’s death—expected me to live with him? In his house? Madness.

“And if we refuse?”

“I’m afraid there is little choice in the matter at this point. The arrangements are already complete.”

Mr. Browning narrowed his blue eyes, scrutinizing me, no doubt, as the numbing shock of his declaration faded to resignation across my face. He sighed. “I do realize Greybourne Hall might hold unfortunate associations for you—”

“Unfortunate?” My voice came out a bit louder than I’d expected. “Is that what you choose to call it?”

He gave a sideways glance at Aunt Jo then returned to me, a pained look hovering about his eyes. His voice, however, remained firm. “Forgive me if I startled you. I hadn’t expected such a violent reaction to what I assumed was the logical next step. Perhaps I should make myself a bit clearer.” He gave a curt sigh. “I only intend for you to stay at Greybourne Hall till some place more suitable can be arranged. Unfortunately, there are few options at present.”

Ice enveloped my heart. I had no wish to travel to, let alone live at that dreadful house, not even for a single night. In his letters, Jacob had described the rambling structure as a gray pile of stones fit for vampires, or worse. I could only image Mr. Browning, this dark-headed devil before me, at home in such a place.

This is the first book by Diana Wallis Taylor I have read and I was quite excited to read about Hadassah since the book of Esther is near and dear to my heart. This story of Hadassah incorporates many intricate details of Susa’s city life. The author also includes interesting tidbits about Hadassah, Mordecai, Xerxes, and his queen mother that make these main characters unique fictionally from the characterizations I’ve read in other Biblical fiction books based on Esther. Good research into the history, culture, and customs of the Persians help to paint the background well.

The pacing of the plot, however, felt a bit off and the story dragged somewhat until Haman came into play. I was a bit surprised that Haman had such little role in this story and most of the plot was about Esther and Xerxes’ relationship and Esther’s friendship with her eunuch guard and her mother-in-law. It was interesting to learn about Esther and Mordecai’s presumed final resting place which I wasn’t aware of.

Besides the usual vendors, there were strange, sweaty men with beady eyes who were looking to get rich from the additional population.

In the wee hours of the morning, while Mordecai sat with his head in his hands, silently praying, Jerusha stopped breathing, slipping away so quietly that Hadassah thought she was still sleeping.

One day, to the people’s relief, the news was spread that the unwelcome banquet guests had been ordered back to their provinces—to prepare for war.

Instead of bowing, Hadassah smiled unabashedly and gazed directly at the king, who at that moment had turned his head.

“Do not give your name as Hadassah, but tell them it is Esther, which is a Persian name. I would have you hide your Jewish heritage for now.”

She felt their eyes silently appraising her; some with open interest, some with sympathy, and others with calculating shrewdness.

Esther asked each maid gentle, innocuous questions about her homeland, favorite foods, culture, and the like, listening attentively to their answers and making sure to speak to them by name both to let them know they were important to her and also to help her remember who was who.

A great action-filled start to this new series called Roughwater Ranch Cowboys by Dana Mentink! The author always delivers fast-paced, well-written, adrenaline-filled romantic suspense and she definitely lives up to her reputation with this newest book. Dangers on the Ranch starts out with Mitch, a former US Marshall and a cowboy, squaring off against his younger brother whom he put away in prison for multiple murders. Mitch is a stoic man, loyal and hard-working but also tender. The opening scene also involves his brother’s ex-wife Jane who tries to warn Mitch of his brother’s escape but also seeks help in protecting her son. The rest of the book is a roller coaster ride of action as both are chased by the psychopath of a brother and ex-husband who seeks revenge. In the midst of running for their lives and protecting their loved ones, Mitch and Jane find common ground – in affection, family, and faith.

Risking Love has been a long time in coming. You see when I wrote Buying Love, book one in the Maple Run series, I had only intended for it to be a standalone. But soon the other characters clamored for attention and you, the readers, sent me messages asking for Shorty and Nikki’s story.

Like any good writer, I sat in front of my laptop prepared to whip out their story in the speed in which I wrote Buying Love. Yeah, it did NOT go as I anticipated. You see, Shorty and Nikki refused to talk to me. They wouldn’t answer my questions about their past, about how it affected them. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

So I wrote book two, Finding Love, featuring Luke and Delaney. They were more than willing to share their heart. I fully intended to then make Shorty and Nikki’s story book three. I figured they’d had enough appearances through book two that they were fully ready to reveal all to me and let me write their story.

Wrong.

As you know, if you’ve been reading chronologically through the series, book three is about Belle and Micah. They spoke with me freely. I just couldn’t understand why Shorty and Nikki wouldn’t be so candid. Fortunately, while writing Belle and Micah’s story, Nikki began to speak. Then Shorty spoke, and I knew I’d finally be able to write their story.

Y’all, writing Risking Love was tough! They fought me at every turn. I can’t recall how many times I complained about them. Thank goodness my critique partners had patience with me as I fought for every word in this story. And now that their story is out in the world, I’m wrecked with nerves. Will they live up to your anticipation? Will the story truly show how tenuous the relationship between these two are?

As you began to read Risking Love, I pray it blesses you. Whether you’re reading strictly for entertainment or seeking God’s greater truth, I pray you experience those things. And more than that, I thank you for picking up their book and joining me once more in Maple Run. It’s been a blessing as I return to tell the stories in this fictional Virginia town.

Such powerfully moving words. This is the first book by Cathy Gohlke that I have read and I’m still reeling from its impact. Beautifully written, heart-achingly soulful, and hopeful even in the midst of unspeakable atrocities and devastation, The Medallion will steal your heart and mind as the author sweeps you into WWII Poland. The story centers around a Polish couple, Sophia and Janek, and a Jewish couple, Rosa and Itzhak, and their baby girl. As the war rages on, an underground network takes Jewish children out from the ghettos in hopes that they’ll one day be reunited with their parents after the war. The sacrifices made by those parents giving up their children and those risking their lives to help the helpless and the devotion they had to the cause are overwhelming yet so clearly portrayed in the book. Faith plays a large part in all the characters’ lives and unites them in the end.

The Medallion was inspired by two true stories—the first was the WWII account of Itzhak Dugin and his Jewish family, persecuted in Lithuania. Their heart-wrenching story made world news when the tunnel from which Itzhak escaped the Nazis was discovered using modern technology.

The second was the story of Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker within Żegota (an underground Polish Council to Aid Jews), who developed a network to rescue children. Despite terrible risks, they smuggled 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto and certain death at the hands of the Nazis, then hid them in Polish homes, convents, churches and hospitals until the end of the war. Approximately 2,000 of those children were found after the war. Theories abound regarding the whereabouts of those missing. I totally enjoy revisiting characters from previous stories! That’s one reason I love writing ‘Family Sagas” like the Texas Romances that has ten full length novels and Cross Timbers Romances with two books and counting! The third launches this coming September.

This book is a bit different from the other historical fiction I’ve read by Liz Tolsma. It involves the true crimes committed by a Georgia Tann in abducting children and selling them to the highest bidder between 1924-1950 in Tennessee and focuses on one fictional young widow who loses her three year old daughter to Ms. Tann in 1933. Cecile is barely getting by after the death of her husband but loves her daughter Millie and does her best to care for her. Millie, at three years of age, is rambunctious, stubborn, and often rebellious but is well-loved by her mother. When Millie is stolen by Ms. Tann, Cecile does everything in her power, from begging to breaking and entering, to get her back. Percy is a struggling lawyer who’s been unknowingly helping Ms. Tann with the abductions and “adoptions” and has his own troubled and painful childhood. Cecile’s persistence wins Percy over and they set out to find her missing Millie while taking on the crooked political giants in Memphis, TN.

The story has an interesting premise, plot and series of events that are loosely based on historical information. The heartache that Cecile endures as a mother is so real, as is the joy and fulfillment of adoptive parenthood that RD and Darcy (secondary characters who help Percy) cling to.

Georgia Tann was a woman who ran an adoption agency in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1924 until 1950. It is estimated that, in that time, she kidnapped over five thousand children and sold them to the highest bidder. She even advertised the children in the newspaper, especially around the holidays. Some of the nation’s biggest celebrities adopted through Miss Tann, including Joan Crawford, Dick Powell, and June Allyson.
