Where Can I Flee

War is on the horizon during the spring of 1861. It will be an event that will change the lives of everyone in its path. The Harper family included.

Frank Harper is a young man full of dreams and ambitions. Even when the country is split and war breaks out, Frank will do whatever is necessary to see his dreams come true, even when that means putting on a uniform and leaving home.

For the first time, Claire Harper is forced to consider the reasons behind such a conflict. Should slavery be abolished? Which side should she be on, and what does God have to say about this? Claire is torn between her own opinions and those of her family. The struggle within her only increases when she repeatedly runs into a kind and handsome Union soldier. She longs to see her brother turn to Christ before it is too late. Desperate to reach her brother with the gospel, Claire pens a series of inspiring letters. Will she be able to handle all the obstacles of war and continue to be a witness to those around her?

How long can Claire last when her heart is torn in half and she is burdened for her brother’s soul? How long can Frank resist his sister’s urgent pleas or the gentle tugging from within? Can a man outrun a holy God?

In the Shadow of Thy Wings

Devastation sweeps across the land, and the families of Maple Grove cannot escape when war arrives at their front doors. After her father entrusts her with a new and dangerous task, Sally Chandler must find the courage to obey despite her fear. Meanwhile, her best friend, Claire Harper, is determined to serve others, even if it means putting herself in danger. But with a certain handsome Union soldier stationed nearby, Claire finds her heart in danger of falling for the enemy. Their differing loyalties create complications that neither could expect; her twin brother fighting for the Confederacy is only one of them. Frank Harper left home with one goal in mind – to become a prosperous plantation owner. Two years later, not only is he further from his goal, but he’s beginning to question his own desires–something that becomes more complicated when his heart becomes involved. The families of Maple Grove must learn how to survive the uncertainty of war and a country split in two. While the war in the nation rages on, the battle within grows stronger. Will they learn that the only safe place to hide is in the shadow of Thy Wings?

My Two Cents:

These two books really bring to light the struggles and hardships brought on by the Civil War.  They also show hope, love, courage, and forgiveness. I loved how the Gospel was weaved throughout the story.

The Harper family is a close knit family and this shines throughout the books – especially in Where Can I Flee.  The letters between brother and sister (twins) are both heartwarming and heart-wrenching.

I have to admit that the beginning of the first book (Where Can I flee) was slow and it took me several chapters to get into it.  However, once I did, I really enjoyed the writing. Heath had a well developed story-line.  Her characters had depth and I found myself able to connect with them.  I wanted to see what would happen next. I do wish is that the verbiage would have been more consistent and true to the time period.  This would give the story more authenticity.  For example, most of the time Claire speaks like someone from the upper class though her family are poor farmers. Once in a while there is a “y’all” thrown in yet other times she will say “you”.  The shop keeper often times spoke like someone who  was poor.  There are a few other parts of the story I wish had more clarity and were more resolved.

Overall, I give these two book 4 out of 5 stars.  If you like historical fiction, these are two books you would definitely enjoy!

Thank you to Celebrate Lit and A.M. Heath for an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.

A MAMM FOR CHRISTMAS
Amy Lillard
Bernice Yoder has far too much to do to entertain holiday dreams. Even if she can help Jess Schmucker outwit his three mischievous young daughters, it’s impossible to imagine the handsome widower can see her as anything but a scolding schoolteacher. He never guesses how a magical Christmas Eve will open his eyes to love or how Der Herr will awaken their faith and hope.

AN UNEXPECTED CHRISTMAS BLESSING
Molly Jebber
As much as Charity Lantz’s children need a father, the young widow isn’t sure her new neighbor Luke Fisher can ever be the right choice. They’re having more disagreements than snowflakes in December. Besides, he’s never given a sign he wants to be more than friends. Can Gott show them a way past their misunderstandings to a forever love?

My Two Cents:

I loved Molly Jebber’s story.  It was my favorite of the three!  At Christmas it can be so difficult for those who have lost a loved one. This sweet story deals with loss but it also deals with hope. Charity trusted God, for herself and for her children and he blessed her!

I was disappointed with Kelly Long’s story.  I would not classify this as Christian fiction as it has sexual content.  The content was unnecessary.  I would have loved the story otherwise.

If you are looking for a great Christmas read, both Amy Lillard and Molly Jebber’s stories make the book worth buying. I give each of their stories 5 stars.

My Two Cents

Can I just say I love Anna and Felty? I want them to by my grandparents! I have enjoyed every single book in The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series and Huckleberry Hearts was just as good as the other books.

The characters of Huckleberry Hearts are endearing.  I loved Cassie from the beginning.  She struggled and grew throughout the book and it was a joy to watch.  Many could relate to the question that plagued Zach Reynolds: Why does God allow bad things to happen? You will appreciate Cassie’s tender heart as she helps Zach.

Huckleberry Hearts is well-written and you can tell the author has a good understanding of the Amish culture.  The characters have depth. The author used the place and setting well – they enhanced and worked well with the story.

Not read the other books in this series? That is A-okay.  This book can be read as a standalone.

I know I will be re-reading every single book in this series for years in the future.  They are that good.  I give Huckleberry Hearts 5 out of 5 stars.  If you love good Amish fiction, this is a book you will not want to miss!

My Two Cents

It is always fun to find a new author. Especially an author who writes not only Amish fiction but in the historical contexts. Molly Jebber does a wonderful keeping to the Amish culture. It is obvious to the reader she has done her research on the culture of the Amish during this time period.

Change of Heart is a refreshing take on Amish fiction because the storyline and setting are so different from the typical Amish genre.  The characters are very different but written well.  The idea of pocket quilts was fascinating to me and their use in the story makes it quite endearing.  The relationships between the character are encouraging. The bonds between Becca and her sister are strong and even shunning has not been able to separate them. Their support for each other help to remind us what family is all about.

I give Change of Heart 5 stars out of 5 stars. This is a sweet story that will captivate you from beginning to end.

Praying her story gives God glory, she hopes each one ministers His love, mercy, and grace to its readers. She and Ron live in Clarksville, Texas with two grandsons, Christian and Benjamen.

My Two Cents

This book was intended to be towards the YA audience, however, I think people of any age can enjoy this book. I loved Boggs the dog. He was such an addition to the book.  Caryl wrote from his POV at times and I enjoyed reading his thoughts.  McKenzie is another character I liked.  She stuck to her guns and would not wobble in her beliefs. We can learn a lot for her.

The story was full of events that kept it moving.  I wanted to know what happens to the group. It was hard to put down.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.  If you like dystopian fiction, you will love The King’s Highway!

“Christian readers will find in these pages a powerful testament to the power of faith in dark times, and even agnostics will be uplifted by the joie de vivre of this remarkable woman.” — Kirkus Reviews

MY TWO CENTS

Halo Found Hope is a moving story about a woman who encountered a life threatening, life changing illness and trusted God.  Let me warn you, bring your box of tissues for this book! I cried sad, heartbreaking tears, I cried happy tears, and I cried tears of relief.  I. Cried. A. Lot. However, it was worth every tear to read this encouraging story.

There were so many things I loved about this book.  Helo wrote the book as if you were sitting in her living room having a chat with her.  She was so honest – sharing things that made her vulnerable, things that were wonderful and her disappointments, trials and struggles.

So many of us complain about our lives forgetting the blessings that God has given each of us.  Helo story will make you thankful for God’s grace and mercy; his watch care and sufficiency.  After I finished reading this life changing book, I wanted to do for people just like Helo does.

I give Helo Found Hope 5 out of 5 stars.  This is a book that will change your life, leave you thankful for God’s blessings, and appreciate that you have the ability to get up each morning….and do for others.

Daughters of the Heart

Daughters of the Heart by Caryl McAdoo is a 310 page novel in the Christian historical fiction genre. It is the fifth book in the Texas Romance series but can be read as a standalone.  Daughters of the Heart is an indie publication and was released on August 28, 2015.  To purchase your copy, click here.

Daughters of the Heart

Overview

God’s perfect plan is oft so hard to determine. In his life, Henry Buckmeyer has never been so beside himself. His little girls are so young, just babies, too young. He hates the whole idea of men coming to take them away and is inclined to shoot every one of them, but praise God for a level-headed, loving wife and step-mother! She helps keep him sane amidst the female chaos. Packed with fun, romance, deception, action, heartbreak and tears, this delightful Christian novel keeps the twists and turns coming. Gwendolyn, Cecelia, and the youngest, Bonnie, make a pact never to break their father’s heart like their big sister did. Then their determination is sorely tried when suitors show up, and he gets so pigheaded with his rules. Will Henry survive his daughters coming of age? Will they endure and keep their promises to each other? From one man asking to court her—who Daddy sends packing—Gwen goes to three! How can she ever decide? Cecelia knows exactly who she wants, but she’s still a year away from Daddy’s acceptable courting age. What if her beau doesn’t know or won’t wait? And Bonnie hates being the baby and wants to be grown-up more than just about anything…except her man. She is for sure and for certain in love. Will the Buckmeyer home ever be settled and peaceful again? Will any of his daughters find true love…a man he’ll approve and to whom he can give his blessing?

My Two Cents

I thoroughly enjoyed Daughters of the Heart by Caryl McAdoo.  She has a way of writing that feels authentic and reflects her love of the Lord.  I loved the quirky sayings she included and the added humor made the book light-hearted and fun.

There were several characters in Daughters of the Heart, but the storyline was easy to follow.  The characters are well written and had depth.  There was tension, love, heartache, and the conflict of honoring your parents while staying true to yourself.

I loved following the drama of the Buckmeyer sisters. It kept my attention throughout because I wanted to see what the girls did and if their father finally approved of a suitor. Having teenagers myself, I could relate to the Buckmeyer parents. However, at times I also felt bad for the girls.  Loving and being frustrated with characters make for a good story! Caryl did not disappoint!

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. If you love historical romance that is God centered, you won’t want to miss this book!

unnamed (1)

Overview

It is 1941 and America teeters on the brink of war. Outgoing naval officer Ensign Jim Avery escorts British convoys across the North Atlantic in a brand-new destroyer, the USS Atwood. Back on shore, Boston Navy Yard secretary Mary Stirling does her work quietly and efficiently, happy to be out of the limelight. Yet, despite her reserved nature, she never could back down from a challenge. When evidence of sabotage on the Atwood is found, Jim and Mary must work together to uncover the culprit. A bewildering maze of suspects emerges, and Mary is dismayed to find that even someone close to her is under suspicion. With the increasing pressure, Jim and Mary find that many new challenges–and dangers–await them.

Sarah Sundin takes readers to the tense months before the US entered WWII. Readers will encounter German U-boats and torpedoes, along with the explosive power of true love, in this hopeful and romantic story.

My Two Cents

Through Waters Deep is the first book I have read from Susan Sundin and it was fabulous.  I was hooked from the beginning.  Sundin’s book had it all – mystery, suspense, romance, friendship, surprises and tension.  She has a way of writing that makes you want to grab your highlighter because the words move you and you do not want to forget them.

Sundin’s writing is wonderful but her historical research was superb.  She wove the history in where it was not overwhelming but supplemented the story well.  I felt as if I was right there inside the story. Plus, I learned somethings about World War II that I had not known before.

The main character, Mary, is very easy to like. She is quiet, efficient at her job, and very humble.  Jim is an admirable character.  I enjoyed seeing Mary and Jim’s friendship develop and how they supported each other in difficult times.  This book inspired me to listen more and be a better friend.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.  This is a story you do not want to miss!

Counting on a Cowboy

Counting on a Cowboy by Debra Clopton is a 320 page novel in the Christian Contemporary Romance genre. It is book two in the A Four of Heart Ranch Romance Series but can be red as a standalone. Counting on a Cowboy is published by Thomas Nelson and was released on August 11, 2015. To order your own copy, click here.

Counting on a Cowboy

Overview

After losing everything she held dear, Abby never wants to love again. But a certain cowboy may just spur her to wonder if love might be worth the risk.

Running from a past that haunts her, Abby Knightly is drawn to the cozy town of Wishing Springs, Texas. Maybe this small town could offer hope and healing and a future for Abby . . . if she’s brave enough to reach out and take it by the reins.

Bo Monahan isn’t interested in the new romantic destination his little town has become—or the women who might be looking at him like he’s their next Mr. Right. Between taking care of his Pops and his growing stirrup business, he isn’t looking for serious romantic commitments. But when the infant son he never knew about shows up at his doorstep, his world is turned upside down.

This confirmed bachelor might not think he needs a wife, but he sure needs help. Even Abby can see that, and despite her best efforts to keep her distance, she can’t help but be drawn to this new father-son duo. As Abby throws herself into helping Bo navigate fatherhood, hope sparks between them, revealing that maybe, just maybe, they can navigate their dark pasts and emerge together into a future as bright as the Texas sun itself.

My Two Cents

Counting on a Cowboy is an easy read and a very sweet story.  Abby comes to Wishing Springs reeling from pain and tragedy; hoping to start over and make a new life for herself. I loved how Clopton revealed Abby’s story piece by piece throughout the novel.  It made the story interesting and I wanted to keep reading.

I enjoyed watching Abby grow throughout this book.  Clopton has a way of drawing you into what her characters are feeling. She writes their raw emotions.  Clopton did not gloss over issues that she brought to light in her book which was very refreshing. There were issues of side characters that exposed. Sometimes when there are side stories it distracts from the main storyline.  In Counting on a Cowboy the side issues added to story by providing tension and made it more engaging.

My only disappointment with this book was that it seemed a bit unrealistic.  Bo seemed to not want to have anything to do with the women who were drawn to the town through his sister-in-law’s articles.  Yet, he seems to fall in love with Abby right away.  I think there was an opportunity for some tension to be provided and this would have added to the story.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and am glad I read it.  I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
