Book: A Cry in the Dark

Author: Jessica R. Patch

Genre: Inspirational Psychological Thriller

Release date: February 28, 2023

Deep in the Kentucky hills, three women have been found brutalized and murdered.

But the folks in Night Holler have their own ways and their own laws.

And they’re not talking…

Led to an isolated Appalachian Mountain town by a trail of disturbing murders, FBI special agent Violet Rainwater’s determined to catch a serial killer with a twisted agenda. With locals refusing to reveal their secrets, Violet’s only ally is Detective John Orlando. But even John has an ulterior motive—he’s convinced this case is connected to his wife’s murder.

As they dig deeper, Violet uncovers a link to her own unresolved past. For years she’s worked the cold case of her mother’s abduction, which had led to her birth. The need to look into the eyes of the sinful man who fathered her consumes Violet. Until she can, she’ll never have peace. Because she’s terrified she might be exactly like him.

In this chilling novel, when the present collides with Violet’s mysterious past and John’s tragic loss, they must unravel the warped, sinuous connections before the killer strikes again. Guest Review from Mindy

This is the first book I’ve read by Jessica R Patch and I am delighted to have finally made my acquaintance with her writing. I’ve heard much about her gripping romantic suspense and she did not disappoint. The fast-paced, nail-biting suspense component is perfectly combined with romance and a strong faith thread. The villain’s point of view adds another intricate layer to the well-formed, complex plot and throws quite a few curveballs when trying to identify the culprit. It’s a book you won’t be able to put down until the very last page is read.

I loved John’s solid, loyal, and tender heart that is rooted in faith and God’s Word. His unwavering commitment to help and understand Violet was absolutely heroic. Violet, in her straight-forward and non-apologetic manner, was surprisingly easy to connect with and love. Their banter was quite delightful and added a touch of humor to the murder investigations that ran dark at times. There are some heavy topics in the book, like trafficking, mental illness, and a twisted version of religion and goodness, but true faith, redemption, and reconciliation shed light on these heavy topics and bring healing and closure.

I didn’t realize that this is book 2 in a series. I’ll have to go back to read Asa and Fiona’s story and am hoping that the next book is about Tiberius. I’m now totally invested in these FBI agents that make up the Strange Crimes Unit!

I received the book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

More from Jessica

A Cry in the Dark can’t be compared to Scooby Doo, but I can thank Scooby Doo for being my first introduction into the world of mystery and all matter of things that go bump in the night. But, in the end, the masks of darkness are always revealed in the light and are exposed. Justice served. This is why I write gritty crime fiction/psychological thrillers outside of my Love Inspired Suspense books.

In Luke 22:53 NLT, they come to arrest Jesus and crucify Him. “Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns.”

Darkness gets one moment. Just one. When they crucify and kill Him. But we know what happens next! Light bursts out of that dark tomb and victory is ours. We’re rescued in darkness from darkness into marvelous light.

In a thriller, darkness gets its moment. I don’t shy away from those tough things. The Bible didn’t shy away from it! We read about a Levite who gave cruel men his concubine which they abused all night until she died, and then he cut her up into parts and sent her to the tribes! God never approves of darkness, nor does He edit it out or sanitize the people. We see the depravity of humans when walking apart from God all through the Bible. And honestly, I’m glad He doesn’t edit out things I’d rather not see or read about. God works in broken people’s lives and through brokenness to accomplish His redemptive purposes. I’m broken. You’re broken. He can use the righteous as well as the wicked. I need to be reminded that without Him, I could fall into those same traps (not cutting up women but… you know) and I need to know that despite my weakness and brokenness, God can and will still use me!

A Cry in the Dark has some violence and darker subject matter (though it is not graphic in real time) because darkness gets a moment…and then hope reaches in, hears the cries in the dark of broken people, and rescues them. And in the end, that’s what this book is about. A great and powerful rescue mission out of darkness and into light!

More from Laine

I would love to introduce my friend, best-selling and award-winning author, whom you may not know yet with a little of the behind the scenes insight. She’s a mom, wife, and partners with God making impossible things become possible not only in her life but for thousands of others. She has a unique perspective because she had a seventeen-year-old marriage resurrect, a financial breakthrough after almost filing bankruptcy, a daughter healed from life-threatening illnesses, and three prodigal children delivered that are now free, whole, and healed. In 2006, she realized that what she was doing as a parent was not working. It seemed that her emotional pleas, rules, and religion weren’t helping her bring her prodigal back home. So she decided and made it my mission to partner with God at a whole new level and created a new way of parenting – one that would bring peace to her life, help millions of other parents, and bring their prodigals back home too. Her newest book, The Parent’s Battle Plan: Warfare Strategies to Win Back Your Prodigal is a must-read book to help parent’s with wayward teens and young adults.

Super Doople Spotlight and Giveaway

About the Book

Book: Super Doople

Author:K.A. Cummins

Genre:Picture Book

Release date: May 4, 2023

You’ve heard the legend of Humpty Dumpty, but do you know the legend of Super Doople? He’s faster than a chicken. He flies higher than an ostrich. No fall can break his shell! And he was once Little Doople, a small and fragile egg like all the other dooples, until his bad habit of not listening caught up to him.

Engaging text with expressive illustrations, Super Doople is a lighthearted tale about resilience and learning to listen. This funny picture book for ages 3-8 is perfect for reading aloud in the classroom or at home.

About the Author

K.A. Cummins is an author and an artist. She explores storytelling in a variety of mediums, blending the wonders of science with the possibilities of what if. When not crafting stories, Cummins loves spending time with her family, collecting fun socks, and venturing outside her comfort zone to try new things—at least once!

Connect with her through her website at https://authorkacummins.com, where you can sign up for emails about upcoming releases.

More from K.A. Cummins

“Super Doople” started with a comic sketch and the idea of what if a scientist put Humpty Dumpty back together again? At first, it was more for fun and to explore creating comics. In fact, in the first version, he bounced like a ball when he hit the ground.

But the idea stuck! I continued to gravitate back to it, enjoying the exploration of telling a story with words and drawings. Many sketches and several versions later, the character became Little Doople, a hopeful and determined boy with a dream of flying who, through a series of events, transforms into Super Doople.

It’s been so much fun working with Little Doople, especially having our youngest son engaged with the story. Our youngest is sixteen now and has a talented eye for design. He’s one of the first people I ask for art critiques (the other being my husband). He even helped me come up with the name doople, for both the character and the egg-people in the story. We brainstormed in the car on a two-hour drive home.

The joy of creating this story, and from the story itself, has become its own source of inspiration. I haven’t stopped brainstorming more story ideas for Little Doople. I’ve even started plotting some of them, but those are under wraps for now.

However, being a homeschool mom and former educator in other forms, I wanted to share a free educational resource to go along with “Super Doople.” So I’ve put together a few science egg-periments, activities, and coloring pages suitable for younger children that’s available for FREE on my TpT store: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Doople-Science-Hands-on-Learning-Activities-9145443.

Hope you and your children enjoy reading “Super Doople.”

Forgiveness: A Surprising Way Forward Interview and Giveaway

About the Book

Book: Forgiveness: A Surprising Way Forward

Authors: Mark Henderson and Michael Snuffer

Genre: Non-fiction; Interpersonal Relations; Religion

Release date: April 13, 2023

WHY AM I SO MISUNDERSTOOD? I am only trying to do what is right! Of course, I forgive, but I can’t seem to get past the pain. God seems distant. Does he even care about me?

Do any of these questions hit close to home? It may surprise you that the underlying cause is often hidden unforgiveness. Our closest relationships, emotional health, and perhaps even our faith seem to be crumbling around us, but most of us have no idea that forgiveness is the way forward. If we are honest, we don’t even know what forgiveness is. We may have a vague idea that it has something to do with “forgetting” or “letting go” but would be hard-pressed to come up with a working definition. Worse yet, we have no idea how to practice forgiveness in a way that brings lasting relief from the hurt we carry. Most of us are not trying to hang on to the pain, but freedom is elusive.

Freedom from your pain is within reach! Forgiveness is not a vague, esoteric concept, nor is it a lofty, out-of-reach ideal. Forgiveness: A Surprising Way Forward digs into the biblical definition of forgiveness, tells real stories of real people who have found healing, clears up some huge misconceptions surrounding forgiveness, and teaches us how topractice forgiveness. If we do not address the wounds of our past, they will shape our future. God has provided a powerful tool to help us find freedom—forgiveness is the surprising way forward!

About the Authors

Mark Henderson received a Masters of Pastoral Counseling, was a licensed counselor, and served as a pastor of counseling for twenty years.

In Memory of Mark Henderson

Mark David Henderson, co-author of this book, passed away from cancer as this book was being finalized. Mark was a loving husband, father, and friend. He touched lives all over the world through his counseling ministry and often said he had a front row seat to God’s miracles. He always made sure the individual knew it was God’s healing, and Mark was simply the servant. His desire was to take what he learned and share it with others, which is the reason for this book.

Michael Snuffer has ministered as a counselor for more than ten years. Mark and Mike founded Equip2CounselTM, a ministry dedicated to providing simple yet powerful counseling tools globally to ministers.

More from Michael

Challenging relationships, frustration with unfair treatment, bursts of anger, and disconnection from God are persistent problems for individuals who carry burdens from their past. Most are unaware unforgiveness is an underlying cause. Time, by itself, rarely brings healing. Instead, the wounds fester and become more painful. Many feel stuck and see no way forward to joy and peace. For most, forgiveness is the first step to healing.

Modern culture and thinking have muddled the meaning of forgiveness. Most don’t understand what forgiveness is or how to practice it. The result? Relief remains out of reach. Forgiveness is a powerful tool which brings healing and freedom.

Mark and I launched the Equip2Counsel™ ministry to provide powerful counseling tools which bring healing to hurting individuals around the world. We soon realized the limitations of in-person training and began to consider how written materials could extend the reach of these tools. We wrote Forgiveness: A Surprising Way Forward to provide a clear, step-by-step process. We wanted to share the stories of real people who found hope and healing through forgiveness. Whether you are a hurting individual or a counselor helping others, we hope many learn and apply the practice of forgiveness which brings freedom.

Interview with Michael

What does success as an author look like to you?

Success is measured by the lives set free through the concepts and practices presented in our book. God is amazing and able to bring restoration and freedom to individuals, even after they have lost hope. Mark and I wrote this book because we have seen first-hand the healing power of God through the practice of forgiveness.

Which chapter was the most difficult to write?

The first chapter, “how not why,” was probably the most difficult. Most of us don’t think about the difference between understanding why we should change vs. knowing how to change. In our first revision, this chapter came in the middle of the book. Later, we realized this principle was foundational and moved it to the beginning which required a significant re-write. It is a challenging concept to unpack with clarity, but critical to bring about lasting positive changes in our life.

What inspired this book?

Mark and I wanted to expand the reach of our ministry and decided to write. Our goal is to bring the Biblical principles applied in our counseling ministry to a wider audience. When we considered the subject matter to tackle first, we realized that forgiveness is often the first step needed by most who come to us for help.

Which author influenced the you most?

I personally love Bob Goff’s fearless approach, his transparency sharing his life with others, and the way he teaches spiritual principles through storytelling. In the same way, Mark and I set out to demonstrate the truth of scripture through the real stories of individuals who have applied the principles and practices of forgiveness.

What is your favorite Bible verse or life verse?

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. (Philippians 3:12)

I love the transparency and determination Paul expresses in this verse. While he is an Apostle of Christ, he realizes he has not yet achieved perfect maturity. He continues to push forward to become the person Jesus has made him to be. This brings me hope and encouragement to press forward toward the life God has planned for me.

What would you like your readers to get out of this book?

In a word, freedom. So many are stuck in unforgiveness in spite of our best efforts to move beyond the hurts of our past. We all need to learn to practice forgiveness in our own lives if we want to live free of the hurts and betrayal of our past.

God set into motion an utterly crazy and unreasonable plan when he sent his own Son to die. Why would he do this? So we can live free of sin. Not only sins we have committed, but God also gave us the ability to be set free of past sins and hurts committed against us. Mark and I hope and pray that readers of this book will see the clear path God has given to be free of the heavy burdens of our past.

What is your vacation spot?

Anywhere warm, sunny, and near water. The beach, lakeside, or on a boat are all my idea of the perfect way to spend a day.

What are you reading right now?

Irrational Kindness! The Crazy Pursuit of an Extraordinary Life by Kevin Williams. In fact, I enjoyed the book so much we are discussing as a team at work.

What is your most well-loved and well-used house appliance?

Definitely my single-serve coffee maker. Gets used multiple times every day!

Why write nonfiction?

My gifts and passions are around helping hurting people find their way to joy and the abundant life Jesus promises. So many are hurting. Many will never come forward for help. For me, non-fiction is a powerful medium able to bring practical tools and real hope to individuals who may not otherwise reach out for help.

Thank you for all you do for Celebrate Lit!

Release date: October 15, 2021

It’s all fun and games until a smelly ghost, and a terrifying shape-shifting entity follows Lucy home. When a malevolent spirit learns Lucy is the keeper of the artifact he has been searching millennia to find, everyone she loves is placed in danger. About the Author

Meet LG Nixon, author, coffee connoisseur, motorcycle enthusiast, and collector of strange artifacts. With her zany imagination, she fuses a page-turning fantasy with a haunting theme and turns it into a spirit filled adventure with quirky and likable characters. After a long career, she left the workplace behind and turned to writing. Her stories are lighthearted but carry an underlying message of the importance of a Biblical worldview. She researches and writes full-time from her home in Michigan where she prowls the night star gazing and watching for a supernatural event. LG loves to ski, ride motorcycles, travel, and fly small planes; but no bungee jumping, thank you very much.

More from LG Nixon

I’ve always had zany and quirky imagination. Growing up in a creaky old house with a grandmother who told stories of ghostly visitations, I was curious. As a child, I filled journals with mystery and detective stories.

These days I write about ghosts and spirits to entertain, and use scripture as dialogue to portray God’s love and forgiveness, our hope of redemption, and the reality of a supernatural dimension just beyond our perception.

Why would a Christian author write about ghosts? Because scripture is filled with ghosts and spirits, angels, and demons along with some amazing creatures. God uses incredible imagery to capture our imagination and draw us deeper into His word. I love to study scripture because I always find new truths that go beyond the scope of imagination.

My writing has grown from my love for Jesus and a desire to share my faith with hope and encouragement. The Issachar Gatekeeper series is designed to show young adults in a fun, adventurous way the impact Christian principles can have on their lives and to deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Our heroine, Lucy, has a wonderful neighbor, Mrs. McGoo, who always comes through to save the day with her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Lucy’s best friend, Schuyler Williams, says, “A really good chocolate chip cookie is nearly a spiritual experience, don’t you think?” So, we are sharing this recipe with you so you can sit, relax, and share some with a friend. Enjoy!

Interview with L.G. Nixon

Which character did you connect to best in this book?

Malpar—the shape-shifting Hayyothalan. He is stuck in a dire situation and his outlook is bleak until he meets Lucy who reminds him there is always help available to those who ask. We’ve all been in situations that test our fortitude. Love, encouragement, and forgiveness have immense healing powers.

Which part of the book was the most difficult to write?

The beginning. I had the storyline, the settings and location, the characters, and the theme. But, how to start? Several free writing sessions later, the first scene in the first chapter still wasn’t coming together. It was rewritten numerous times. The problem was finally solved when I cut the preamble and began with the action. I write in a linear fashion so the beginning had to be correct before the rest of the story could unfold.

What is your vacation spot?

We live in Michigan, the winter and water wonderland. There are so many beautiful locations but one of our favorites is northern Michigan, along the Leelanau Peninsula. It’s surrounded by Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay with beautiful white sandy beaches that invite you to stroll barefoot through the surf.

Describe your view as you’re sitting in your writing chair.

I am so fortunate! We live in a wooded area filled with wildlife. My office windows overlook areas that are well traveled by deer—you can see the paths they have worn in the dirt. Birds frequent the thick, sturdy tree limbs too, and I often see a variety of birds flitting past my window. The robin is our state bird and they hang out in clusters, even in wintertime. It’s lovely!

If you could have one book or piece of art or music on a deserted island, what would it be and why?

I would need my Bible above all things. Within its pages, I find inspiration, comfort, beauty, and imagination. The psalms offer music and poetry, and spiritual hymns. It’s God’s love letter to me and it is where I can hear His voice.

Thank you for letting us get to know you better!

Guest Review from Donna

What I think you should know:
Lost In Wonderland by Tabitha Bouldin is the second book in the Beyond Wonderland Series.  It is a Fantasy, Steampunk, retelling/ mashup with a Christian perspective. This book is a mashup of Through the Looking Glass and Little Red Riding Hood. I would not recommend that you start the series with this book, for the most enjoyment you need to know the background on the story from the first book.
What I think about this book:
I am admittedly not a huge Alice In Wonderland fan, however I was quickly entranced with the first book in the series and very excited to read this one!  In this story Bouldin takes Alice, Hatter, and Alpha on a Wild Adventure in the Ivory Kingdom. Our heroes have to overcome great adversity to rescue the kingdom that is held captive by a giant metal dragon and even crazier animatronics.  Queen Ivory was a bit of a puzzle to me, but I adored Scarlett and Faolan. This book was even better than the first, which is really an accomplishment!  I cannot wait to see where Alice goes next!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

More from Tabitha

Writing Lost in Wonderland was such a wonderful creative outlet for my imagination. After writing Madness in Wonderland, I knew I wasn’t ready to let these characters go. They were anxious for new challenges and new adventures that allowed them to explore more of the world they’d just freed.

Of course, new characters were a must, and Scarlett stepped right up to have her story told.

While Madness in Wonderland is an Alice in Wonderland and Frankenstein mashup, for Lost in Wonderland, I went with a Through the Looking Glass and Red Riding Hood mashup that gave a deeper well of storytelling for Wonderland and brought all sorts of new creatures into the mix.

Alice and Hatter face new obstacles in their journey, and Scarlett is not one to be left behind. Especially when he has her loyal guard Faolan by her side.

Prepare to set sail across a new Wonderland.

War of Torment Review and Giveaway

About the Book

Book: War of Torment

Author: Ronie Kendig

Genre: Space Opera, Science Fiction

Release date: April 11, 2023

The time for peace is over—now he demands vengeance

They followed him back. Against his will, against his intention. Now enemies threaten from every direction. Amidst it all Marco Dusan struggles to lead his people, to help them survive, even mayhap win the war. He will take any advantage to even the odds. But only after tragedy strikes does he learn just how much he’s willing to sacrifice.

He’s not alone. Droserans fight as one, united against the offworlders— Symmachians who covet their planet. With the aid of unexpected allies, the Droserans battle on longer than anyone could have anticipated. Yet they cannot win. And the Faa’Cris, those supernatural warriors, fair of face and fierce of mien, do nothing.

But not all have turned their backs. After a bitter year of pain and loss, Kersei Dragoumis navigates a new heritage, ever intent on defending her people. Like her, light-years away from the Quadrants and even farther from the girl she thought she was, Eija Zacdari must come to terms with a new role. Or, rather, with an ancient one. And her success or failure may determine back in the Quadrants who lives and who dies.

In the end, Marco will have vengeance for the torment brought by this war. No matter the price. Not even if the price is his soul.

Guest Review from Mindy

“Before him now stood not a confident, brooding hunter-turned-medora, but a warrior, a father, a king… A very broken one.”

It’s been a couple of weeks since I finished this incredible finale to the space opera saga and yet I’m still stunned and speechless. This book is the epitome of an epic finale. It’s all-consuming and all-encompassing. It will completely and devastatingly engage all of your senses, your heart, mind, and spirit as it showers you with every emotion known to mankind. This is a series that needs to be read in order and I suggest you read all four books without interruption. Once you encounter Marco and his world, there is no going back.
Ronie Kendig writes brilliant action books and the final war that weaves four subplots with different sets of characters shows how truly brilliant the author is. Marco is much changed and leads the war on Drosero with anger and bitterness. Admiral Deken secretly protects Drosero from the atmosphere while Tigo and Jez work on different planets and Reef and Eija fight to destroy the enemy’s soldiers. There are many surprising revelations, heart-wrenching sacrifices, and shocking betrayals as good struggles against evil. I shed many tears reading this book and it was worth every one.

It’s an unforgettable book that will have you pondering long after the last page has been read. I received the book from the author/publisher and via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Read an Excerpt

Anticipation tremored in his veins—it had come. The Progenitor’s War had finally arrived.

“Admiral on the bridge!”

“What’s going on? What was that swarm of ships?” Amid grating claxons and pulsing orange lights running around the bulkheads of the Command deck, Fleet Admiral Domitas Deken strode past the offices and conference rooms to the central Command hub of the newly christened Cronus, the flagship of the Symmachian armada. He glared up at the array hovering in the air between him and his handpicked officers, who had been transferred from other ships in the fleet.

“A fleet, sir.” Grim-faced, Captain Lasson Pount stood with the executive officer.

“What fleet?” Domitas demanded. “We have the only fleet in the Quadrants!”

“Unknown, sir.” Commander Wellsey Dimar, onetime XO of the Macedon, recorded the images and waved them to Command. “None we have record of, and the ships are . . .” He frowned at what he saw. “They’re entirely foreign. Fast. Advanced—incredibly so.”

Domitas compared radar to the moments before the arrival of the new ships. “Where’d they come from?”

“As far as we can tell,” Pount said with a shake of his head, “the jumpgate at the Chryzanthe.”

“Can’t be. Baric reported it damaged by that spherical ship.” Never would Domitas forget watching that alien ship explode from the jumpgate and come around, firing. The relay vids of the incident had taken nearly a day to reach the Cronus on its route to Drosero.

“Maybe they slipped through in time?” The captain quirked a blond eyebrow.

“Baric said it was damaged beyond repair,” Dimar noted. “Perhaps the ship came through one of the other Sentinels.”

“They’re not operational yet. With Baric’s flair for the dramatic, it’s possible the Chryzanthe isn’t as damaged as he reported.” Probably wanted a way to keep anyone from nosing into whatever he and that alien were doing. Domitas indicated to the array, then flicked the screen, rolling back the time. “Those ships are moving fast.”

“Like we were standing still,” Dimar noted.

“Any idea where they’re headed?”

“I’ll calculate,” Pount said, tapping on a console, then nodding at the results that splashed through the air between them. “Course and speed suggest a trajectory for Drosero.”

“In fact”—his fingers flew over the console—“the exact same course the first craft took.”

“We think,” Dimar added with a look to Domitas. “The engine signature of the first craft is so slight that, while we can confirm that fleet followed its course, we cannot say if they ended up at the same place.”

Not comforting. “Do we have a lock on the sphere’s final destination?”

“Speculation only, sir.”

Domitas waited for said speculation, and when neither officer expounded, he lifted his brows. “Is there a problem?”

“Pount and Dimar exchanged glances before the XO sighed. “Long-range scans suggest it entered Droseran orbit, but since we have yet to hear from the Damocles, we don’t know if those projections are accurate.”

Drosero. This war sure was waking up the ’verse, wasn’t it?

Book Excerpt

Please, God. Let there be a comb in here.

Her hand still tingled where it had come in contact with her destiny. She shook her fingers, slipped her purse strap over her shoulder, and searched for a trash can to toss her cup.

Willy Walker’s hearty voice boomed behind her. “Tell me, Mr. Park. Can you help our Harry-boy? His wife’s a tough opponent.”

“Please, call me Ryan. And trust me. I’m here to make sure the mayor’s office stays blue instead of powder-puff pink.”

Katherine side-eyed the group. The men guffawed, and she bit the inside of her cheek. She’d give him one pass. Think of what beautiful children they could make together.

“After all,” he hooked his thumbs in his pockets, “there’s a natural order to things. The mayor can run the town, and his wife can run the Ladies Auxiliary. Everybody wins.”

Katherine’s hand cooled. The five-second fantasy was nice while it lasted. She took the last swig of her coffee, crushed the cup, and tossed it in a trash can. Who needed sugar?

She did a 180-degree turn and barged into the cluster of testosterone. “I doubt the mayor could’ve even found his blue office without his wife directing him all these years. Mister Park.”

Persuade Me Not Interview and Giveaway

About the Book

Book: Persuade Me Not

Author: Joanne Markey

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Release date: April 4, 2023

Forgiveness is only a prayer away… or is it?

As the oldest daughter at Kellynch Station, Elizabeth Elliot prides herself on her exemplary public image. In fact, women could learn a thing or two by following her example—her public example.

There are things Liz doesn’t want known, and she guards them closely. In fact, keeping everyone except her best friend from ever seeing the truth behind her impenetrable facade is the only thing she can control.

Enter Michael Page. Unassuming and too stubborn for his own good, Mick bucks trend by bringing sheep back to cattle country. Just a small flock at first, but their numbers are growing. There’s just one problem to deal with now. Liz Elliot.

With all her airs and fancy ways, and the unreasonable demands she makes of the town and its people, Liz is a walking antagonism. Maybe he should’ve stayed home after that first meeting, but something keeps bringing him back. If nothing else, someone has to foil her outrageous attempts to do who-knows-what with the town.

Then a carefully worded slip of the tongue hints at a mystery that might be worth digging into.

As the truth comes to light, and Liz’s carefully crafted world comes crashing down, who can either of them trust?

About the Author

Originally from Australia, Joanne Markey now lives in Ohio with her husband and seven children. When she’s not reading or writing, you might find her wandering the property with her kids in search of whatever seasonal treasure they’re trying to find.

More from Joanne

I don’t remember exactly when it was that I first started thinking about writing Persuade Me Not. I know I was still writing Persuade Me, the first book in the Daughters of the Bush series. At the time I started writing, I only planned to write one book in that setting. However, the more I wrote, the more I thought about the other characters. And somewhere along the way, I started thinking that, if Liz ever got her happily-ever-after, it would have to be with someone unexpected.

That idea slowly took hold. It would have to be a man as unlike her father as it was possible to be. Someone humble and down-to-earth. Someone with both the integrity to dig deeper to find the truth, and the stubbornness to knock down all the walls Liz had put up.

Right about then I came across an interesting coffee table book about old shearing sheds in Australia. Being an Aussie living in the US and finding that book on the shelves in a store here meant I instantly bought it. And after flicking through the pages, another idea started to form…

At one point in time, Clermont—the town where my book is set—had a substantial wool industry. Which meant sheep. Which meant it could theoretically be possible for there to be a run-down shearing shed on one of the cattle stations in that area. And, to Walter Elliot, what could be worse than running sheep in cattle country?

As far as Walter Elliott is concerned, he is a cattleman with a long and illustrious heritage. Therefore, only those who emulated his lifestyle would be worthy of the attention of his daughter. (Obviously, no other man would rise to the heights of perfection as he, but they could try.)

I don’t know if there are any sheep in the Clermont area now, but if there are, they’re not a big thing. I don’t remember ever seeing any when I lived there as a kid. It was cattle country, and sheep were something we saw when we were driving to visit my grandparents in Victoria (south of the dingo fence, in other words).

With all of that in mind, if, for the sake of the story, one man brought sheep back… and that one man ended up being stubborn and determined to uncover the truth… we’d have a book.

And that is how Persuade Me Not came to be.

Interview with Joanne

  1. Which part of the book was the most difficult to write?

The accident. Despite knowing how it would end, leading up to it was hard because I knew someone was going to get hurt. How hurt ended up being a result of a survey of my beta team who all objected strongly to any major injuries so it ended up being less traumatic than I had originally planned. It was still hard to write though and I tackled those chapters (the before, during, and after) as quickly as I could and sent them out to my team all at once so they would know how it turned out and wouldn’t be left hanging.

  1. What inspired this book?

Persuade Me was meant to be a standalone, but the nearer I got to finishing the writing of that book, the more the idea that I needed to give Liz her own story pressed on me. I went right from one book in the series to the next, eager to give both sisters their deserved happily-ever-afters. I wasn’t sure how that would turn out with Liz, or if anyone would want to read about this nasty person, but I think she grows on you. It just takes a little longer than it does with some characters.

  1. Which author influenced you the most?

Grace Livingston Hill. Hers were the books I read so many times I couldn’t pick them up to read them yet again and so I started trying to write my own. It seemed… possible, this idea of writing about people and places and turning all the imaginings in my head into stories. And I think that is due in part to seeing how well and how easily she wrote, setting her books in her lifetime and writing about the things she knew. While I love historical and regency novels, I prefer to write contemporary because that is what I know.

  1. What are you reading right now?

I’m reading back through some Alistair MacLean books that I haven’t read in several years, plus some I’d never owned before. I just finished one book and the next I plan to read is River of Death. It sounded interesting.

  1. Describe your view as you’re sitting in your writing chair.

My view changes depending on where I sit when I write. At this very moment I’m looking across the dining room table into the garage which has been converted to a playroom. There are, naturally, toys scattered everywhere and our two youngest daughters are happily playing with their dolls.

Sometimes I write at night to finish up a chapter and when that happens, my view is of a completely darkened room where the only lights are a faint glow from the clock, and various electronics around the room. The mirror is attached to the wall at the foot of our bed, and as I sit leaning against the wall, I can see my reflection faintly lit by the light of my screen. I try to avoid looking at that much because my brain wants to delve into the spooky… the fantastical idea of looking up and seeing eyes staring back at me. My brain knows that isn’t possible, but my brain is also very good at imagining any scenario it wants to.

Other times I’ll be sitting at the picnic table. The view from there is open fields, woods, and rolling hills.

Thank you for letting us get to know you better!
