This book is an interesting compilation of 21 very short stories focused on different aspects of love. Each fictional story is written by a different author and contains life applications at the end of each chapter along with Scripture. I’ve never read a complication of stories or devotionals presented quite this way before and it was refreshing to read this book. The topics and life applications range from providing comfort to others with Christ’s love to having hope for the future despite disappointments. These applications are infused with God’s promises and his unfailing and unwavering character.

This is the first book written by Alana Terry that I have read and it’s so appropriate that I started reading it on Valentine’s Day and the story is a retelling of her love story with her husband! The book is definitely geared towards the Christian reader and has wonderfully encouraging Scripture as well as prayers liberally sprinkled throughout the story. The writing focuses on the heartache of two devoted Christians who fall in love but are kept apart due to life circumstances. The main characters’ doubts, cries of grief and sorrow for love perceived to be lost, struggles to understand God’s bigger plan, and striving for peace and contentment even when submerged in confusion are all so real and touchable.

Susannah is barely an adult at almost twenty but has a heart for international missions and for reaching the lost. She is gentle, loving, diligent, and patient. Scott is in his thirties, already an experienced world traveler as a support personnel to the international missionaries. He’s “a missionary to the missionaries.” He is devoted, kind, thoughtful and loving. The book starts out with the first few chapters recounting their “courtship” via phone calls and emails and dwells a bit in the past to catch the reader up to what’s actually happened to keep the two apart. Then the book switches back and forth from Susannah’s world in tiny town of Orchard Grove in Washington and Scott’s world in Massachusetts. I really enjoyed their attending Urbana Missionary Conference together since I have wonderful memories of that conference when I attended.

The book was enjoyable and made me reflect upon my own thought processes and prayers during difficult situations that broke my heart.

With no means of support, Simon takes a job helping Mem with her harvest, relieving her of the need of Lott’s help. But their growing attraction to each other makes them both uneasy. Mem gladly escapes to town when her sister begins labor, and Simon, believing it best to distance himself from Mem, takes his son and leaves.

But neither anticipates the worst gale New England has ever seen—or that the storm will threaten all they hold dear.

“She refused to be undone by a well-appointed face.”

This is the first book by Anne Mateer I have read and it is delightful. It is relatively short with a fast-paced storyline, lovely characters, and a nicely orchestrated theme of second chances, trust, and forgiveness with God as the Healing Physician. Anyone who enjoys historical romance will enjoy this book.

Remembrance, or Mem, operates an apple orchard by herself after her father’s passing. She yearns for love and family of her own but cannot get past the betrayal of a previous suitor nor the fact that the men want only her land that her father left her. Mem is capable, strong-willed, hard-working but also loving and loyal to family. Simon is a recent immigrant from Ireland, fleeing the grief of his wife’s death and the condescending, control-wielding father-in-law. He has a four year old son to raise and protect and finds himself in Mem’s employ. His gentle kindness, loyalty and faithfulness, thoughtfulness and compassion all stir Mem’s heart like no one else has. They must fend off an older suitor who only wants Mem’s land and must survive the storm that blows through their town of Providence, Rhode Island.

The storm, which was an actual event, felt so real in the book. I could taste the salt in the air and feel the rising tides as the water and wind shredded the town. What a frightening disaster to live through!

Mem and Simon’s realization that they need to depend on God and God alone was a sweet spot in the story. We all have that epiphany kind of moments in our spiritual walk, don’t we?

I’m always up for a good historical story. It’s what I enjoy reading. It’s what I enjoy writing. But I find that my pleasure in any historical fiction increases exponentially when the story at hand is based on at least a kernel of historical fact. All four of my full-length novels share this trait. So it stood to reason that when turning my mind to a historical novella I would seek the same grounding in truth I’ve sought before.

So what historical fact inspired No Small Storm? It was a combination of them, actually. Which I think always makes for the best tales!

I like an overarching historical event to help frame a story. Things like war or economic crisis or natural disaster. Situations in the historical record which required courage or resilience or sacrifice from the people who lived through them. When I stumbled upon the Great Gale of 1815, which hit Providence, Rhode Island particularly hard, I knew it could provide obstacles for my characters to overcome.

As I began to read about this event—a hurricane before such storms were commonly called hurricanes—I happened upon some first hand accounts of that day. Fascinating remembrances about a storm arriving without much preamble, then departing and leaving bright sunny skies with which to view the destruction.

And destruction there was! Not only from wind and water, but also the fact that both of those things unleashed the ships moored in the harbor and sent them sailing down the main street of town! Can you imagine looking out of the second or third story window of a building which was likely flooded on the ground floor and seeing a ship coming at you?

That, in itself, was dramatic enough. Especially when coupled with the fact that those ships often broke apart, whether from wind and waves or from contact with the buildings and bridges they encountered on land. Then I considered the in those ships? What happened to them? Many were flung into the water, searching for purchase.

It was just such a circumstance that brought one man to the window of a young woman. She helped him inside. They were later married. And if finding such a story that isn’t a romance writer’s delight, I don’t know what is!

Finally, as I continued to read about the destruction in the area, I discovered a few lines about area orchards. The hanging fruit was found covered with a dusting of white. When tasted, it was discovered to be salt. Salt from storm surge and sea spray. Salt that saturated, even miles inland. Water and wind—and they salt they carried—ruining fruit crops ready for harvest. What could be more devastating to a farmer than that?

And so No Small Storm was born, with Remembrance and Simon each trying to make a good life for themselves, each trying to trust God as they work hard. Each keeping careful watch over their heart. But sometimes circumstances take things we don’t want to give. And give things we never imagined possible.

Historical fact and spiritual truth. Characters who are a product of their times as well as universal in their struggles and desires. It’s the kind of story I love to read. And the kind of story I’m proud to write.

“There is a melody that pulls me. A tune that haunts my waking moments.”

This is the first book by Misty Beller I have read and I am thrilled to have found this wonderful historical romance author. The book is well-written, the plot is engaging, the characters are achingly beautiful and lovable, the story moves at a good pace, and the redemptive love of God is evident in the book. The beauty of the Rocky Mountains along with the harsh and rough conditions during the winter in the mid 1850s is thoroughly infused into the story that I felt like I was with the characters as they travelled from Montana to Canada. Anyone who enjoys historical romance, especially set in the mountains of the West, would love this book.

The story opens up with Simeon’s heart-wrenching loss that makes Simeon into who he is by the time Emma meets him. Simeon is steeped in sorrow, grief, and guilt and remains a recluse as a self-imposed punishment. Yet, even in his brokenness, he is surprisingly gentle, honest, protective, loyal, kind, and loving though he can be gruff at times. His vulnerability is so raw and heart-breaking. Emma is a fugitive, running away from the townspeople in eastern Texas who would harm her for her deceased husband’s illegal and wrongful dealings. She is accompanied by her twin brother Joseph, as they try to make their way to family in Canada. Joseph’s injury brings them to Simeon’s cabin in Montana. Although unwilling at first, Simeon agrees to escort them through the mountains in the middle of winter and Emma, with her loving, loyal, gentle, patient, faithful, and stubborn ways, slowly thaws the ice Simeon has built up around himself against love – love from a woman, love from family, and love from God. Emma’s reminder that “even when we are lost, we aren’t lost from God” helps Simeon rethink his life and his choices.

Now I must go and read Misty Beller’s previous books!

The Treasure of Family

I’m an old-fashioned girl. Always have been. And growing up on the family farm, with grandparents in the old farmhouse next door and cousins living all around us, I can’t imagine my life without family. Now that I’m married with three daughters of my own, I treasure my family even more—both immediate and extended!

In my books, I tend to weave the importance of family into each story somewhere, and This Treacherous Journey is no exception! I first wrote the prologue as a standalone short story, the account of the birth of the hero from another of my books (Reuben Scott from The Lady and the Mountain Call).

It was the story of a father, grieving the loss of his wife and feeling as if he has no choice but to give his newborn twins to another family to raise. I wrote this part of the story a week after my third daughter was born, and I cried buckets through the writing! The story has an even stronger emotional connection for me, because my younger brother and sister were both adopted into our family. I can’t imagine their birth parents having the courage to give them up for adoption unless they knew without a doubt it was the best choice for those sweet babies.

So, as you read This Treacherous Journey, it’s my prayer that you’ll take a moment to cherish your own family. Remember all the special moments. Spend extra time with those you love. Relish the treasures God placed in your life!

My two cents……

This is my first experience reading Author Kimberly Woodhouse. I am really looking forward to reading future books! This book was well written, clearly researched, and engaging from the beginning.

I always enjoy a well-written story, but to read a book and walk away with something to apply to your life is even better! There were two themes in this story that really made me think – Faith and trust in the Lord. The people in the story went through leaving their home, great loss, and more yet still still trusted the Lord. This inspired me!

Be sure to pick up your copy of The Mayflower Bride – it will be sure to inspire you!

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. Any reader who enjoys historical fiction and enjoys seeing faith in action will enjoy this novel.

I really enjoyed Toni Shiloh’s Buying Love and Finding Love, but this book tops the previous ones I’ve read. This contemporary inspirational romance highlights some of the issues in our current world through the lens of faith and prayer. And the romance? Sigh….it’s slow, tender, and oh-so sweet.

The author’s writing flows well and is easy to follow. Her town of Freedom Lake is lovely and the secondary characters that inhabit that small town really bring another layer of depth to Jo Ellen and Evan’s story. The struggles that the characters face are so very real and their commitment to Christ (when it happens) is wonderfully heartfelt and genuine.

Jo Ellen, as the heroine, took a good quarter of the book to engage me. Her world is a cocoon of hurt, misplaced pride and blame, and self-absorption. She does get past these things, though, and by the end of the book I felt like I personally supported her through her emotional and spiritual growth. Jo’s compassion and her tender heart shine through, even when she’s grieving and hurting.

From page one, I was Team Evan. Physically, emotionally, and spiritually battered, Evan comes a long way in the first few chapters of the book to cement himself as a hero, even when he does some stupid things later on in the book. His tenacity is admirable and his willingness to admit fault and ask for forgiveness is a great character trait. The author did a good job of explaining an amputee’s fears, questions, pain, and daily struggles.

I also enjoyed getting to know Darryl and Chloe through this book. Perhaps book #2 will be about them? And I’m still holding my breath for Guy and Michelle! I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for these friends!

This is the first book by Elaine Stock that I have read. It is a well-written book though not an easy read. The book held raw emotions, written in a no-nonsense, no holds barred style. The mental illnesses described rang true but it was difficult to read about them all at once.

Sadie is a teenager trapped in a dysfunctional family, unsure of how to get away from the trap. Her mom Tara-Lynn has undiagnosed mental illness and issues passed down from her mother and grandmother. Adam is Sadie’s dad and he also has multiple issues that have remained unaddressed, which only serve to perpetuate the tension at home. Callie is the voice of reason and God’s love who befriends Sadie.

The story is told from Sadie’s first person point of view and alternates with Callie and Adam’s third person point of view. It was an interesting way to present the story but it didn’t resonate with me and I found myself needing to go back every once in awhile to make sure I knew whose point of view I was reading.

The story was heart-wrenching and highlighted awareness for mental illness, particularly for Munchausen Syndrome. It was crafted well with multiple memorable characters. Unfortunately I couldn’t connect completely with any of the characters, though their pain and suffering clearly came through.

The grace and redemptive love of Christ was portrayed poignantly throughout the book.

Show tunes warm my heart and create a happy buzz in my mind. Ever since I can recall, I adored musicals, whether live performances or movies. Throw in amazing choreography and I’m definitely a happy camper! Hmm. I’m thinking you’re probably wondering why I’m kicking off a blog tour about my novel, Her Good Girl, a coming-of-age story about a whole family against the odds, chatting about actors belting out foot-tapping songs?

Here’s another favorite of mine: Liza Minnelli. Remember her from the movie Cabaret? A few months back I ran across this quote from her: Reality is something you rise above. These words hit home, zinged my soul. Life is not about what you’re dished out, but what you do with it instead. See, I was born into a troubled family. My mother slipped deep into the prison of mental illness; my father worked 8 days a week. Throw in a few other dysfunctional barbs and… well… that was my beginning. Is it my present? Will it be my future?
In Her Good Girl, centers on Sadie, a girl on the cusp of becoming a woman. Her life revolves around her mother’s abusive Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MBP) until Sadie discovers a way out… or is it an escape to something deeper and worse by the hands of someone else?
This is what I wrote in the “Author’s Note” section of Her Good Girl:
I first became aware of Munchausen By Proxy (MBP) several years ago when I read an article about what I thought was an emotional disturbance. Research shows that this is maltreatment (abuse and/or neglect) when a person—usually a parent—seeks emotional fulfillment by inflicting an illness on another, often one’s child, and often resulting in death. Recent cases such as the 1996 arrest of Kathy Bush for making her then nine-year-old daughter, Jennifer sick; the 2014 death of five-year-old Garnett by his mother Lacy Spears, and the recent Baby Jax case of a woman, Jessica Valik, who tampered with her son’s feeding tube, are one too many. Yet, I have not written about this type of tragedy and sadness to become a sensationalist.
Stories about the complexities of families draw my attention. I strive to tell stories that inspire others that, through the love and grace of God, one can move forward, families can heal, that there is hope, and that there is no reason to go back. Goodness can, and does, happen to troubled families.
While my mother didn’t suffer from MBP, she was controlled by the terrors of paranoid schizophrenia (I touched upon this as well in Her Good Girl, although, again, it was not autobiographical). I didn’t know about my mother’s condition until I turned 18 and she was first diagnosed at that time. However, what I did know during my childhood was that this was my family’s “normal.” Yet, it still didn’t feel right.
I wanted to rise above this emotional feeling that felt like a trap.
Enter God.
Actually, God and I clicked when I was six (that’s as far back as I can remember His grasp on me). But, it wasn’t until I was baptized into the Christian faith in my early 20s did I start feeling as if I was indeed beginning to rise above my circumstances.
Without Him, my life would be empty and meaningless.
Now, I feel as if I have a future to look forward to. All my novels will not necessarily be reflective of mental illness, but I hope my readers will see in Her Good Girl that by holding God’s hands tightly a family can heal and one can move forward, can live. Or, as one of the major themes of the novel emphasizes: Sometimes digging deep frees you to bloom.

What an incredibly captivating contemporary romance! This is my first novel by Marji Laine and I’m so glad that her book found me. The story is well-written, the plot is intricately planned, the dialogue is so real and engaging, the characters are wonderful, the faith component of the storyline is seamlessly integrated, and the book moves at a great pace with lots of twists and turns.

Annalee is such a beautiful heroine, inside and out. Granted, she’s the baby daughter of a rich attorney running for the mayor seat in Dallas but she’s different from the high-society women. Annalee is sweet, compassionate, loving, down-to-earth, selfless, artistic, creative and so in need of approval and belonging. Yet she has trouble trusting men because of her past experience. CJ is the sole heir to the Whelan empire who has rejected all of his father’s demands to serve as the director for a children’s after-school center in a low income area of the city. He is devoted, loyal, kind, compassionate, hard-working, but he himself has trouble trusting women. Circumstances bring them together but so many incidents and accidents try to keep them apart, especially a particular secret CJ keeps from Annalee. Their slowly blooming friendship and romance is achingly sweet and often tear-filled.

CJ’s faith is amazingly solid and yet he still makes plenty of mistakes, clearly showcasing his need for the Savior and grace. Annalee’s receptive heart and sincere prayers are touching and quite inspirational.

Anyone who enjoys a well-written contemporary inspirational romance novel would absolutely love this book. I was given a copy of the book by author/publisher via Celebrate Lit Tour. I was not required to write a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

AIN’T MISBEHAVING delves into the depth of life from the perspective of a shallow, sheltered woman. Annalee Chambers has been raised to pay attention to all aspects of society, particularly the appearance of success. Being cultured and socially-educated, she’s not really prepared to work in one of the poorest sections of town. And she’s really not expecting to find such joy intertwined with such poverty.

Having my story set in my hometown has some fun aspects. I got to handpick the homes for the main characters and the locations for the after-school program. And even now when I drive past some of those places, I get all excited about the story again.

For instance, I chose a particular building downtown to be CJ’s (the hero’s) condo. It’s in One Arts Plaza. This condo was for sale when I was writing the book so I was able to download actual pictures of the place including the view from its southeast facing patio. You’ll laugh, but I don’t drive by that building without looking up to the 18^th floor and half expecting to see CJ standing there.

AIN’T MISBEHAVING goes much deeper than only the setting, though. It was written a number of years ago, so many that I barely remembered the storyline. But when I started editing, I was moved to tears again and again. These characters are so real, and I would love to meet them!

“Only God could write so perfect a love story.”

And this book indeed is a beautiful love story. It is the first book written by Sharlene MacLaren that I have read and I’m hooked. This book blends good writing, a well-plotted story that is perfectly paced, a hint of intrigue and mystery, memorable characters, great dialogue, historical facts from Civil War with a strong element of faith, salvation, redemption and grace to produce a delightful read.

The solid faith Levi and Josie portray throughout the story is commendable and inspiring. Their compassion and care for those wounded, both physically and spiritually, bring them together in ways that neither have experienced before. Levi is strong, faithful, loyal, compassionate, full of God’s Word and love, thoughtful, loving, a natural leader and makes for a dashing hero. Josie is determined yet tender-hearted, loyal to family and friends, creative, compassionate yet so innocent about the ways of the world and romance. They go through a lot together during their days in the army and a wonderful friendship emerges even before the romance. A hint of intrigue and mystery regarding a traitor in their midst adds a layer of adrenaline to the plot.

Anyone who enjoys a well-written historical romance taking place during the Civil War will appreciate this book.

This is the first book by Molly Jebber that I have read. For full disclosure, I have to admit that I don’t read much Amish fiction. I have read more since becoming a part of the Celebrate Lit Tour review team, but it is not my go-to genre of fiction. That being said, this Amish fiction book that takes place in Charm, Ohio in 1912 blends love and faith in the small Amish community that provides second chances with historical happenings of that era. The deeply woven thread of faith and prayer in the storyline is also an added bonus.

Liza is a bakery owner in Charm who suffered through a terrible marriage to a verbally and emotionally abusive man. She is now a widow, enjoying her time with her sister’s family and bakery. Jacob is a widower just moved into Charm with his troubled teenage daughter. Sparks fly between the two, but many issues – past and present – interfere with their budding relationship. Liza is strong and capable but so timid and fearful in a courtship. Jacob is tender, loyal, and caring but sometimes too pushy and stubborn about getting his own way. Then there is Ellie, Jacob’s daughter, who is willful and spiteful, mostly because she’s still hurting from her mother’s death. Although the characters were definitely three-dimensional and layered, I unfortunately couldn’t really connect with any of them.

The storyline was plotted out well, but the book seemed a bit long and repeatedly addressed Liza’s emotional issues with remarriage more often than was needed.
