Throughout this text, A. J. Gordon makes his argument from a biblical perspective, citing passages in both the Old and New Testament that support the continuation of spiritual gifts. Quoting testimonies of believers across the ages, he offers a convincing argument that the church ministry is, to this day, one of healing.

About the Author

Adoniram_Judson_Gordon Adoniram Judson (A. J.) Gordon (1836–1895) came to prominence in the United States as the evangelical pastor of Clarendon Street Baptist Church in Boston for more than twenty-five years. During his tenure there, he saw the church completely transformed into one of the most spiritual and aggressive churches in America, with an unsurpassed effort in missions. A missionary training school and publishing house were associated with the church, and Gordon preached at many of D. L. Moody’s Northfield Conferences, along with other notable preachers such as A. B. Simpson, A. T. Pierson, and R. A. Torrey. His training school eventually became Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. He also founded Gordon College, in Wenham, Massachusetts. He wrote his most famous book, The Ministry of Healing, in 1882, but he also wrote at least fifteen hymns, including “My Jesus, I Love Thee,” as well as other books of Christian instruction.

This classic Christian work has previously only been self published. Gordon is renowned as founder of Gordon-Conwell Seminary and Gordon College. His writings became foundational work for what later became the spirit-filled movement.

Afflicted but not Crushed

I created the character, Jenna, from The Builder’s Reluctant Bride, during a time of life filled with chaos. Changed ripped stability out from underneath me. I couldn’t tell if my challenges were from God deigned to build my faith or if they were a temptation from the enemy to doubt God. Life struck with a severity that stole the breath from my lungs, so I retreated into a fictional world to process. I needed to be reminded, like Jenna, that my current struggles didn’t negate the ways God was using me. I needed to remember that God would use everything in my life to shape me into His image and draw me closer to Him.

“I thought after his mom died, I had lost the both of them. Then, you came around.” The corners of his eyes crinkled.

“Me?” she squeaked.

“Yes. You changed everything for him. I know you left for college right after graduation, so you likely didn’t see the change. But God took that seed you planted in my son and grew this man.” He gestured to William, who stood with his fire jacket off and held a dog while it licked his soot-covered face. “This man of God.” Carmen looked squarely into her eyes. “I am indebted to you, Jenna.”

She squirmed at his unquestionable sincerity. She didn’t deserve his praise for directing his son to faith, the same faith that later let her down in every conceivable way.

When life’s chaos hit Jenna, it caused her to question her faith and question God’s goodness. It took her time to sift through the mess and find the truth. God is good.

Still.

Always.

Never changing.

Good.

It might not feel good. You might want to give up. You might think there is no way for God to redeem your story, but Jenna would tell you that you would be wrong.

I am so elated that you are a part of this awesome Enduring Love blog tour. I’ve always been a love child per se…loving all things romance. When my second grade teacher introduced me to Amelia Bedelia books by Herman Parish, I knew I would write. Then my mom introduced me to romance by Danielle Steels and the bad girl of books—Jackie Collins. Finally, I decided I’d be the Danyelle with the “y” who will write books about love.

Life has been so rewarding as I finally realize that everything I’ve ever faced was simply for my good. The good, bad, and the ugly now find itself woven in the corridors of my books and I’m grateful to be able to share stories with the world of God’s goodness, grace, mercy, and love.

And you know what’s even greater? We don’t have to be perfect to be a part of His family, to receive His love, or to be a recipient of His grace.

“The truth is easier to handle than most people think. A lies is a betrayal that hits you where you really live.”

Colleen Coble knows how to write romantic suspense. I’ve read many of her books and can confidently say that she knows how to reel her readers in from the prologue and keep us hooked until the very last page. In her latest offering, One Little Lie, the author weaves the lives of a father-daughter duo who escape a cult compound into a small town in Alabama that suddenly sees a multitude of murders and violence. In her trademark style, the author brings in many secondary characters into the plot to add details that only become clear at the very end of the book and to throw the reader off from the true villain. The villain actually does have a voice in the story as well, which is interesting. The plot moves fast with plenty of adrenaline, action, and unforeseen twists; romance between Jane and Reid is subtle. From one little lie in each of the character’s past and/or present, their lives spiral out of control and the lies bring them colliding into each other in one brilliantly plotted story.

Jane, our heroine, is the newly appointed police chief in Pelican Harbor who still bears the scars from her childhood in a cult. She’s strong, independent, intelligent, and compassionate but tends to hold on to her anger tightly. Reid is a documentary journalist who comes into town to create a documentary on small town police chiefs. He’s loyal, passionate, protective, and tender but has a secret and an ulterior motive in being at Pelican Harbor which provides a subplot in the story. Both of the main characters, along with Reid’s son Will, are incredibly easy to love.

When I first started the book, I didn’t realize that this series may turn out to be more like the author’s Rock Harbor series where the entire series focuses mostly on the main character(s). I’m so used to her series following different sets of main characters who are loosely related to each other that I was slightly confused when critical key issues were not addressed by the time I got to the last chapter. Then I realized that the second book will likely pick up where the first book left off (on an emotional cliffhanger, of course). Can’t wait to read what happens next with Jane, Reid, and Will.

If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. I received a copy of the book from Thomas Nelson via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Tanya Stowe really knows how to grab your attention from page one and take you for an adrenaline-drenched, high-intensity suspense that will have you turning the pages! As a militant environmental group threatens to steal the formula for a virulent plant pathogen, Sassa comes into the group’s crosshairs with her work at the university lab. As a single mom with low self-esteem, Sassa is thrown into one dangerous situation after another as she tries to reconstruct the formula and then to find the cure. Jared is a border patrol agent who’d been tasked with protecting Sassa’s boss when the situation turns bleak and Sassa’s well-being is threatened. Sassa and Jared both have emotional baggage from past broken relationships so are wary of each other at first but learn to work with each other and share trust. The romance is sweet but the suspense aspect of the plot is stronger (which I happen to appreciate).

If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will definitely enjoy this one. I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

As a teenager, I spent my summers water-skiing on the King’s River in Central California. Even though we lived on the coast and the ocean, we traveled inland to the smooth river waters every other weekend for our sport. We camped on a sandy beach, skimmed over the water all day long and at night sat under a sky full of brilliant stars and listened to the sound of the water rippling past. Since we lived on the coast with a heavy marine layer, the amazing sky always fascinated me. Surrounded by massive cottonwood trees, with the smell of ripe fruit drifting toward us, my river experiences were different from home and more than memorable. On some nights we’d hear the splash and laughter as teenagers, somewhere across the river, came down to swim. I always wondered what it would be like to live in the nearby small, neat-as-a-pin town, to know the same people all of my life and to be able to drive down to the river with my friends on any given night. I envied those teenagers and always knew I’d someday write a story about central California. I didn’t know it would involve biological warfare and crazed killers…but that transition is another story all its own! I’ll stop here and hope you enjoy Killer Harvest!

What is your favorite Bible verse or life verse?

My life verses feel braided, interwoven, and circular, yet explosive at the same time to me. Lamentations 3:21-23 became my life’s verse when my parents divorced and afterward because of the way it has lifted me out of confusion, failures, despair, or depression, “This I recall to mind, therefore I have hope… The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, they are new every morning, great is Thy faithfulness.” When I was younger and a songwriter/musician, my life verse was Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” During college, my favorite passage was, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10 But, now, as I have finished relaunching The Shivoo, I realize that the first verse of the Bible really ties all of these themes together… “In the beginning, God created…” I now see God’s own amazing creativity as the reason why His lovingkindnesses are new every morning and not stale, and why His love and kindness never cease because they are in a continuum of creativity, and why the word of Christ, when we let it dwell in our lives in a rich way, produces profound wisdom, treasures hidden in secret places, teachings, and admonishment of one another, and singing with grace in our hearts… all of these beautiful, life-giving things are things we cannot boast in because they are not our own good works or our own salvation, but actually the good works and salvation that God prepared for life beforehand through His creation and creativity that we should walk in them, for we are His workmanship.

Anywhere with a view, my camera, a blank sheet of paper and pen, and a good book.

What are you reading right now?

Ruth Hally Barton’s Invitation to Solitude and Silence, and Debbie Johnson’s The Journey: A Traveling Companion Through the New Testament.

What is your most well-loved and well-used house appliance?

It’s either my washing machine or my egg poacher. I use them both so much, but I’ve had to live without a washing machine before, so it’s probably the washing machine.

If you could have one piece of art or music a deserted island, what would it be and why?

Tchaikovsky – The Seasons: October (“Autumn Song”) Here it is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq7TNv7Pbm8 It is such a wandering delightful piece, you know “all who wander are not lost” – The quote emerged from a poem that was written by J. R. R. Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings. The poem is used to describe Aragorn. But, lately, I’ve also discovered “a channel” on Spotify called peaceful guitar, which is the answer to all of my longing for personal musical rest, and I think I’m in love with that channel. “Silence in company didn’t hold the weight and mass of silence alone.”

I highly recommend that you read No Less Days first before reading From Sky to Sky. The first book sets the premise and some of the characters in place so that you’re not confused by how things pick up at the beginning of this story. The journey of the “elderfolk” or “longevites” continues through third person limited perspective of Zac Wilson who was introduced during the first book. David Galloway who indoctrinated the readers into the plight of the “longevites” in No Less Days also plays a prominent role in this book. The plot has twists and turns that takes the reader to places unexpected, as the author beautifully melds lyrical prose, intense and raw emotions, redemption and God’s unrelenting love with a hefty dose of speculative/sci-fi and wonderfully complex, layered characters.

Zac is an unforgettable character. Impulsive, passionate, vivid, and full of life, he sees and acts with emotion and has an extra sense of empathy that allows him to bond with people but also becomes his Achilles’ heel. Zac meets other longevites that he longs to enfold into his family but tragic circumstances, misunderstandings, and century-old fears become obstacles in their relationships. I really enjoyed getting to know Zac, just like I did getting to know David. His struggle against the injustices of the world, his struggle against God Himself and his past pain, and his PTSD are real, tangible, and extremely relatable. Though this book answered questions that were left at the end of the first book, it ended without a definitive conclusion…..so I’m thinking there is a third book in the series?

If you enjoy a well-written book that is somewhat outside-the-box, you will totally love this book. I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

For years, the theme of immortality has intrigued me. I love the Elves of Middle-Earth, the “happiest and saddest” of the peoples Tolkien created as they watch the ages pass. I love the exploration of aged sorrow in Tuck Everlasting. I’ve stuck with TV shows which shall remain nameless (but, ahem, a few feature vampires) because I’m always wondering how did this writer tackle immortality? Anything new? Are the characters convincingly old and young at the same time?

The thing is, while some of these fiction works satisfy me more than others, I’m always left with a tug of incompletion. Eventually I figured out this tug was a story in my own head and heart wanting to come out, a contemporary story that included the gospel. What might God’s plan be for those whose earthly days seem unnumbered? How would their age affect their interactions with humanity and with faith? These questions were the springboard for the No Less Days series, and of course the answers vary with the individual. Ultimately this is why I write: to explore people, their inner selves, their relationships. My goal is always to create characters that breathe from the page.

In From Sky to Sky, we get a look into the head and heart of Zac Wilson, who has been on the run from God longer than any of us could imagine: a full century playing the prodigal. I always try to be honest about how much life can hurt, “even” for the Christian; if we had triple the number of years to accumulate hurt in this broken world, we’d have a lot of it. That’s true of all my ageless characters, including Zac. To scratch the surface, this man fought in two world wars and has outlived all his children.

But the sum of Zac is much more than his collected wounds. He is a deep-feeling, fun-loving, generous guy. He enjoys music and physical activity. He has an insatiable sweet tooth and a need for open spaces. He’s not afraid to laugh at his own expense, and he has a boundless love for people and the stories of their lives.

My hope is that readers will grow to love this young old guy as they journey with him through some dark times toward redemption and light.

Another fantastic romantic suspense from Dana Mentink! This is book 3 in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series but can be read as a stand-alone (I highly recommend the other books in the series as well). The suspense in the plot is strong and well played out as Sergio searches for the one responsible for his sister’s death. As the deceased sister’s best friend, Helen feels responsible and does what she can to help Sergio figure out the truth. Sergio starts out as a bitter and hardened man but softens up considerably to Helen as they get to know each other. Helen is a tender but strong-willed manager of the ranch who doggedly searches for the answer. The romantic thread between Sergio and Helen is well-done and Sergio’s twin nieces add a dimension of cuteness to the story. Sergio’s bumps and mistakes in parenthood as he goes from carefree bachelor to overnight caretaker and father of two are so real, funny, and totally relatable. There is also a good faith thread and a lesson on forgiveness and letting go of vengeance.

If you’re following along in the series, you’ll get some extra love by being able to catch up with Liam, Mitch, and the rest of the crowd from the previous books.

Dana Mentink has to be one of my favorite Love Inspired Suspense authors. I can’t wait for the next book where we’ll learn about Chad and his stoic ways.

When I was pregnant with our first son, I had some weird nightmares which fueled my fears. The Fifth Avenue Story Society is another beautifully written book by Rachel Hauck that will thrill her followers and garner new fans. The author does something a bit different in this book – the timeline stays in the present (so don’t expect split timeline plot) but she melds five different characters and their heartaches into a vividly orchestrated story of secrets, grief, forgiveness, and redemption. The plot is definitely character driven and there is this delicious slow build up of suspense as each person’s secret is revealed within the story society that the five characters are invited to. The author is known for her lyrical writing, weaving the supernatural into the plot line, and emotional depth in her characters and this book shines in these areas.

The five characters – Jett, Lexa, Chuck, Coral, and Ed – are unique individuals living in NYC who have fascinating lives filled with pain, past heartaches, and secrets. Some of their secrets will surprise you and some will awe you. Week after week, they meet together as the “story society” without fully realizing who invited them and what their purpose is. The mingling of their lives, though completely random at first, brings fuller and more abundant lives. Though Jett and Lexa are the centerpiece of the fivesome, I really liked Coral and how grounded she is in the midst of a professional and personal crisis. And I liked Chuck, the underdog, who tries so hard to overcome his rage and lack of self-control to find his way back into his children’s lives.

Once you open this book, you will become deeply emotionally invested in the characters’ welfare; so beware! You won’t be able to put the book down.
