What I think you should know:
The Last Gasp is a Christian Historical Fiction, Fairytale Retelling by Chautona Havig. It is the first book in the Ever After Mysteries Series, a series of standalone novels set in the 1920s, all as different fairytale retellings.

What I think about this book:
I am a fairytale enthusiast. I will happily read or watch one hundred different versions of the same story and try to guess how the author is going to make it their own. Havig opened this series up with a BANG! Lucinda Ashton is a cigarillo girl who has unknowingly fallen in love with a star. Gary is ready to leave his life behind to become a pastor, but Hollywood is not ready to let him go. This story was so much fun. I adored how Havig used words that were authentic to the time period, I was particularly excited to see ‘Get a Wiggle On”. I loved the Cohens and Herbie was tearing at my heartstrings. Even though this is a story that has been done 1000 times, Havig did an amazing job of making the story fresh and exciting , I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and will recommend this to everyone I know!

What Beautiful, Unexpected Parallel Did I Find Writing this Mystery?

I bought it at Pic-n-Save when I was eleven—an 8.5×11 paperback book of traditional fairy tales. I learned another side of the age-old stories that you don’t see from Disney. Rapunzel? Yeah. That was the story about the queen who was craving rampion (a salad vegetable) so much that she promised to give up her child for it. Rampion—Rapunzel. It’s a thing.

It’s also where I learned Cinderella’s name as “Aschenputtel.” Look, those Brothers Grimm were… well, they were German and that should explain everything. “Puttel” just sings of German, doesn’t it? That tale was also a bit gruesome. The one sister cut off her big toe to make the shoe fit because her mother said, “You won’t have to walk anywhere if you’re a queen. Who needs it!” So the idiotic girl did. Same for the other sister and her heel. Seriously, didn’t she learn from her older sister?

Oh, and it’s the one where mother and stepsisters get their eyes picked out by birds. It reminded me of Proverbs 30:17. “The eye that mocks a father and scorns a mother, the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the young eagles will eat it.”

Talk about bringing Scripture to life for kids there. *Gulp*

True confession, our kids used to sing that verse to the tune of “All Hail the Pow’r of Jesus’ Name.” You should have heard the lusty voices of our children in our Grand Marquis station wagon (may the wonderful beast rest in peace) singing, “The ravens shall pick out his eyes and eeee-agles eeee-eeaat the saaaammmme!”

I digress.

Cinderella—I mean, Aschenputtel—really wasn’t my favorite story, though. I liked other stories from other books. Like the Ten Brothers—a Chinese folk tale. You know. Fairy tale.

Know which fairy tale I liked even less than Cinderella?

The Little Mermaid. Seriously, I didn’t like the original (Sorry Mr. Andersen… I just didn’t), and I can’t stand Disney’s. But when we first began planning the Ever After Mysteries, I knew which one I wanted to do. The Little Mermaid had everything going for it. Houdini and a water tank. Can’t you just see it? It would have been great. But a friend asked who was writing about the “cigarillo girl” (as I mention in THIS post), and well… the rest is history. Or at least, it’s set back in history.

But there’s one truth I discovered as I wrote this mystery.

Mystery… that’s a good word for this truth, actually. Cinderella is a beautiful picture of Jesus as our prince. We can be His bride and put on the shoe He has fashioned only to fit us, or we can try to snatch it up and make it suit our wills and hold our overgrown egos (work with me here). He takes us out of our ragged, dirty lives and brings us home… to Him. To His Father.

Is there anything more beautiful? I don’t think so.

In The Last Gasp, Gary knows Cinda long before she knows him—truly knows him. He loves her just as she is. Is it a perfect retelling of the beauty of Christ’s love for his church? Not hardly. It wasn’t intended to demonstrate that relationship at all. But there are tiny nuances that do. And that’s pretty cool.

What I think you should know:

Regaining Mercy, a contemporary Christian Romance by Carolyn Miller is the twelfth  book in the Independence Island Series and the sixth book set on Elnora Island.  This book features several characters from previous books and does give spoilers for those characters, however it can be read as a standalone.

What you might need to know:

Mindy’s son demonstrates many characteristics associated with the Autism Spectrum. Mindy has many regrets from her past that leave her feeling unworthy.

What I think about this this book:

  I love getting to know characters that are just briefly mentioned in previous books, in this story we get to know Dermot who works at Greener Gardens. We also meet Mercy, a single Mom who is struggling to stay afloat while dealing with the judgement of  some vocal critics in her small community.  I really enjoyed getting to know both of them along with Jon and his best friend Mercy. While she is only a child and overall played a small part in the story I love how Mercy showed the acceptance and love that we all need to show others.   This was a really sweet story with enough action to keep it interesting.

Ten behind the scenes extras from A Lady in Attendance:

1. This book takes place in Amherst and Buffalo New York, places I lived for four years. Buffalo has had some rough years but if you ever visit the area you will see gorgeous old buildings, beautiful parks and cemeteries and understand why it was once a booming and prosperous city (and why I love it still). Gilbert and Hazel both grew up in the area (though, they did not know each other until the story begins). Two of my children were born in Buffalo and though they aren’t being raised there, I tell them stories.
2. Hazel spent five years in a New York State reformatory. Reformatories were basically the first juvenile delinquent facilities (the ages of who could be sentenced there was different from today). Reformatories were a new idea. There were still a lot of people who believed in “bad blood” and that a criminal could never be anything but a criminal. There were some heroes who fought hard to convince the public, that people could change. Because of this book’s storyline, I could not go too deeply into this subject, but it is fascinating!
3. Gilbert Watts is this book’s leading man. I gave up on being able to use the name Gilbert on one of my own kids and instead gave it to a character. I adore the name Gilbert and everything about this character, hope you do too!
4. There is a joke at the end of the book about a graveyard (don’t worry, it’s not scary) and it’s a nod to my mom who used to use this joke on us every time we passed a cemetery. I really love sneaking in things into my stories that will make my kids, family and friends smile when they read it. I often think of my books as love letters from me to others and the best kind of love letters are personal.
5. My husband is a dentist and as a result, we tend to notice dentist in media. They are often portrayed as villains or comic relief. I decided it would be my goal to write a romantic dentist that would change the image in readers minds.
6. Gilbert tells Hazel that being a dentist is really being an artist. When my husband was first trying to decide on a career path, he shadowed a dentist. He didn’t really think it would be for him, but he was open to exploring options. He came home and told me that the cool thing about dentistry was that you were essentially making art that was functional, every day. Little sculptures that helped people eat and smile better. Gilbert from the book is very different from my husband, but it was fun sneaking in little pieces of him in there.
7. One of my favorite scenes from this book take place at a corn husking. There is a tradition that says, if a red ear of corn is found, the finder gets a kiss. Sigh, I love that scene!
8. Without always meaning to, my books end up having messages woven into them. I believe one of the messages in A Lady in Attendance is forgiveness. In this case, it’s forgiving of one’s self. I believe this message is one that we all need at some point in our lives (or many points!).
9. My books are coming out in a different order than they were written in. I actually wrote this book before Yours Truly, Thomas and after A Life Once Dreamed. This story has been waiting a long time to be in print! During that time, it has been reshaped in little ways. It gained a prologue and lost an epilogue, it was tamed down in places and intensified in others, but the heart of it has always been the same!
10. One last piece of A Lady in Attendance trivia—several of my books have had their titles changed. It’s part of the writing process. The books get a working title and later a title that the rest of the world knows it by. The Hope of Azure Springs was originally just Azure Springs. Yours Truly, Thomas was originally Dear, Azure Springs. A Life Once Dreamed was originally The Belle of Penance. A Lady in Attendance began as A Lady in Attendance and stayed A Lady in Attendance. Not only is this title fitting because dental assistants were knowns by this or as an attending lady, but also because Hazel wrestles with her worth. In a society that believes a mistake made once can leave a mark forever, it takes the right eyes and open heart to realize that there truly is a lady in attendance.

What I think you should know:
Pint of No Return by Dana Mentink is a cozy mystery. It is the first in a new dessert cozy mystery series, A Shake Shop Mystery. Trinidad Jones has to restart her life in her ex-husband’s home town. Unfortunately it is awkward to be one of three ex wives in a small town.

What I think about this book:
If you have read Mentink you know that you are in for a real treat. This may be the best cozy mystery I have ever read! Sprocket is such a charming small town with residents that bring it to life.I am not sure who is my favorite character. I LOVED Trinidad, her life didn’t turn out like she dreamed, however she is fighting to make the best of what she has. Carlos and Diego are so funny I enjoy their spunk. Noodles is so loveable, even if he is a service dog flunkie. Papa who showed up just when Trinidad needed him. Quinn who is so patient with Doug. The story was a great mystery that kept me guessing until the end! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

That happens shortly after Trinidad opens her new shop, and from there on out it’s a sticky, spine tingling, sweet and satisfying and slightly funny adventure in mystery land. I had an absolute blast writing the first installment in this series, and I’m knee deep in the second as I write this. What I think you should know:
Shattered Guilt a Christian Romantic Suspense by Kathleen J. Robison is the first book in the Bay Town Series. It is a contemporary novel set in a small town in Mississippi.

What you might need to know:
Shattered Guilt covers Human Trafficking and some of the things that make some high risk as a target for trafficking including: Drug Addiction and broken home lives.
Virginia, one of the characters, has educational difficulties and developmental delays.

What I think you should know:
Robison hit it out of the ball park with a thought provoking book on human trafficking that I am not afraid with share with my teenager. I appreciate how she portrayed the way that some of the victims were lured into danger without ever knowing what they were facing. I appreciate how she put a human face on characters like Virginia who are inherently more trusting of people in their lives.  Melanie and Lacey were heartwarming characters who captured my attention along with a host of other townspeople that I would like to read more about. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Bay Town.

Guilt comes from within. Shame comes from without ~ Voddie Bouchman

I homeschooled my eight children, and they all attended a conservative Christian university. My husband is a pastor. So, when I started writing Shattered Guilt, the running joke in the family was, “Mom wrote a book, and it has no bad language, no sex, and no graphic violence, but it’s about human trafficking.” And they were right, but God gave me the words to depict a passionate stance against sin, a pure romance, and horrific tragedy…hopefully, all without offending my readers.

The story begins with Melanie. A delightful single mom and her teenage daughter living in a charming little town on the gulf coast of Mississippi. I love their relationship and their faith, but Melanie’s past mistakes linger in the back of her mind, and she somehow thinks herself not worthy. The theme of guilt runs throughout this book in both the lives of those trafficked and those not. When young girls are targeted for human trafficking, Melanie lays aside the self-imposed shame of her past and fights to save those who will suffer far worse feelings of guilt and shame, for which they had no control.

My heart breaks for those whose lives are paralyzed by their pasts. While writing Shattered Guilt, I didn’t realize the connection between Melanie’s shame and the victims of trafficking. The latter suffer guilt and shame through no fault of their own. Yet, all of us carry baggage; if it’s something that needs forgiveness and confession, and we’ve done that, it’s a done deal. We shouldn’t let the past paralyze us from living a life of fullness in Christ. Melanie and even Pastor Desmond come to realize this in their lives. We need to be the best that God desires for us to be, and to be effective in His work, we must experience his love and forgiveness.

Years ago, when I was first writing the rough draft of this novel, human trafficking was finally getting recognition in the world, and the horrors of who was being trafficked were shocking. That’s what gripped my heart, and I was embarrassed that I didn’t have a clue about the scope of this morally reprehensible practice.  Enslavement of human beings by another has been on this earth forever, and that’s why awareness and action are so important today. In addition, there are so many facets as to how one becomes a victim in this tragedy. I now try never to assume how someone’s life takes the path it does, but I only care that they find a way to hear God’s voice calling them. Every Christian story is about God’s love.

Although I love writing a suspense story, I love creating my characters too. I hope you’ll enjoy getting to know the people of Bay Town as much as I enjoyed writing about them. This dual time line story surrounding the Golden Gate Bridge had it all with the past and present characters, the advancement in diving equipment and archaeology under water. Luke and Margo in 1933 and Kayla and Steven in the present with their strong characteristics and dedication to their work made this an appealing read with all the historical research interwoven into the tale. This story is filled with history, mystery, drama, greed for gold, romance, and faith in each era.  The events were realistic with breath taking moments while reading all that went into building the Golden Gate Bridge during the early years with the dive teams and all they endured. The present day story was just as powerful with the fictional archaeology discoveries for the mystery theme.

Kimberly Woodhouse books are worthwhile reads as they are filled with well researched historical events and data that makes history more interesting. The author’s notes about her research into the building of the Golden Gate Bridge is an added bonus for readers in this book.

BRIDGE OF GOLD was a blast for me to write. Not only do I love writing dual-timeline stories, but the present-day hero and heroine are named after my daughter and her husband. Steven and Kayla in the book are fictitious, but there are a few things in the book that do mimic their real-life namesakes.

One of them is food.

My son-in-law Steven in real life is six-foot-four and active military. The man can eat. It’s amazing to me how many calories it takes just for him to survive! Then there’s my daughter, Kayla. She was an elite swimmer for many years along with her brother. I could never keep them fed when they were at the height of their swimming careers. In fact, I joked that all I did was cook and load the dishwasher during those years.

To celebrate the release of BRIDGE OF GOLD, I’m going to give out a recipe that I created almost thirty years ago. It went through many revisions the first few months as I perfected it and now you get a special treat because I do not give this recipe out. In fact, one of my dearest friends begged for it when our kids were little. I gave in but made her promise to close her eyes while she made it (LOL) and to never, ever give it to anyone else.

Kim’s Chocolate Chunk Cookies – recipe by Kimberley Woodhouse

2 cups King Arthur all-purpose flour

½ tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. kosher salt

¾ cup melted/browned butter (this is important! Don’t skip this step)

2 Tb. Hot chocolate mix

1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar

½ cup white sugar

1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk

1 – 12 ounce package mega morsels (I use Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips)

Directions: combine the first three dry ingredients and mix well. In a small saucepan on the stove, melt and brown the butter. Medium heat is recommended but you’ve got to watch it so it doesn’t burn. You want a beautiful caramel color. Set aside and allow to cool to around 100 degrees F before continuing. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Once the browned butter is cool, add the hot chocolate mix to it. Transfer to a stand mixer and blend the butter mixture with the sugar. Whip it until well combined and frothy about 2 mins. Gradually add eggs and flour mixture, beating on low just until blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Using a cookie scoop, drop heaping TB scoops 2 inches apart on parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 12-14 minutes, watching carefully. Allow to cool on cookie sheets for 5 minutes and then transfer to cooling racks. Enjoy!

What I think you should know:
Island Charm is a Christian Contemporary Beach Read by Audrey Wick. It is a standalone novel largely set in Key West, Florida.

What you might need to know:
Gunnar takes care of his friend/mentor with dementia.
While it is a Christian story I did not feel strong Christian themes until the devotional at the end of the book.

What I think about this book:
I was super intrigued by the premise of the story, going on your twin’s honeymoon when her groom cancels the wedding.  Wick did a great job of whisking me away to Key West and making me wish I could taste the pie. I really enjoyed how she described the Island and the people on the Island.  I enjoyed this sweet story and how Anna and Gunnar’s romance unfolded, the story progressed quickly without feeling rushed. This is a perfect light beach read or read when you are dreaming of the beach.

 “The Importance of Setting in Fiction Writing”

My favorite element in writing a novel is setting. Making places come alive through storytelling brings special joy, and I’m fortunate to be able to do that in the pages of Island Charm.

Island Charm is my first beach-read, a standalone contemporary novel set in Key West. Key West is a small island in the Florida Keys, an archipelago that stretches west from the southern peninsula of Florida. The Keys dangle into the Gulf of Mexico like a string of island pearls. Key West is the last on the strand.

I first experienced Key West in the summer, but years later, I traveled back in winter. Whether its July or January, Key West is beautiful anytime of year. What I like best about the island is its walkability. It’s roughly four miles long and one mile across, making it easy to explore on foot. The boardwalk, docks, piers, and public beaches means there is plenty to experience. Fantastic views stretch in all directions.

Additionally, the island has an impressive literary history. Authors including Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, Shel Silverstein, Philip Burton, Judy Blume, and Meg Cabot have all called the island their home at one time or another. It’s easy to see why my heroine, Anna, is so taken with the scenery, just like these writers. I hope readers will be as well!

What I think you should know:

Stealing the First Mate a contemporary Christian fiction by Tabitha Bouldin is the eleventh book in the Independence Island Series and the fifth book set on Elnora Island.  This book features several characters from previous books and does give spoilers for those characters, however it can be read as a standalone.

What I think about this book:

OH MY heart, I think that this is my favorite book in the series so far, I cannot say enough great things about this book!  Darcy may not be my favorite heroine, but Nigel is definitely my favorite so far. Mr Riggins is the worst villain I have read in a long time. He let down a kid who trusted him, and used his knowledge to make him miserable for the better part of a decade. Nigel made the wrong choice as an 18 year old and it has kept him from understanding his worth since. My heart ached for him. I wanted to smack Darcy upside to head for her to realize the love that was right in front of her.  The message of Forgiveness and truly giving your worries to God was beautiful even if it was hard learned for the characters.

I love the friends-to-something-more trope. There’s something invigorating about the challenges of stepping into a different kind of relationship with someone you already know and trust. The risk of losing the friendship if things go badly comes to the forefront and each character has to decide if they’ll take the risk or keep things as they are.

For Nigel and Darcy, there’s the added difficulty of Nigel’s unrequited love. They’ve been best friends forever, and he’s loved Darcy all that time. And she’s clueless! How does that happen?

I wish I could say this story came from my own experience, but that isn’t the case. While my husband and I knew each other for several years before we started dating, we were hardly friends. High school social circles are brutal things. Plus, he had a crush on my cousin, and I was dating someone else.

But it all worked out.

And we’re best friends now.

When it came time to write Stealing the First Mate, I knew Nigel and Darcy were friends. It wasn’t until I worked my way through the first chapter that the depth of their relationship started to emerge, and I realized they were best friends. Darcy runs to Nigel for advise (even dating advise, which became really awkward for Nigel).

Darcy has been looking for Mr. Right so long she can’t see the truth staring back at her in Nigel’s eyes.

Writing their story is one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in writing.

“Listen, I may not normally play ball at this level, but I understand the rules of the game. You don’t necessarily care what I stand for. You want me on the ticket because together we’d have 60-65 percent support in the polls. Now, I might be willing to go along with you, but I need to think about it to be sure.” 

I couldn’t quite tell if the glint in his eye was anger or respect. “Sure thing. Just don’t keep me waiting too long. Like you said, there are a few other folks I could get to fill my dance card.” The smile at the end of his sentence didn’t quite make it to his eyes. 

Robbie and Ken turned quickly as I exited the suite sooner than they expected. I nodded to Robbie. “Let’s go.” 

He waited for the elevator doors to close before the question burst from his lips. “Well?” 

“He asked.” 

“And?” 

“I said I needed to think about it.” 

“We talked about this on the plane. The vice presidency is not something you say no to.”

The author of the Jim Mitchell series of novels (Chasing Deception, Undue Pressure and Running), Dave Milbrandt fell in love with writing in junior high and has been a storyteller ever since. A former staff writer for a daily newspaper, the Southern California native spent five years in journalism and public relations before becoming a teacher.
