Dana Mentink knows how to write heart-pounding, nail-biting suspense. And this book’s plot is so intricately laid out that I could not guess who the villain was until it was revealed! Beckett and Laney’s race to stay alive and find clues to the real murderer is intense and thrilling. The romance is low-key since they are already married but emotionally estranged from Beckett’s imprisonment and his pulling away. Their backstories are heart-breaking but their growth through the current trials is delightful and encouraging. But I felt like I was in book 2 of a series because there was so much backstory for Laney and Beckett. I did love that Beckett and Laney are so different in personality and somewhat far apart in age yet perfect for each other in life and faith. The setting of Death Valley, CA is fascinating. If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will enjoy this book.

What’s up in Death Valley?

As the desert vistas opened up in front of Papa Bear and me, I felt an amazing sense of peace. Mind you, we were visiting Death Valley in the fall. No braving the 130 plus summer temperatures for this couple! I simply cannot describe to you the wonder I felt, as a suburbanite from a bustling, noisy Northern California city. There is never a moment at home when I see only open horizon, when I hear nothing but quiet breezes. I was, quite simply, stunned.

I had done some research about places to visit as potential series settings, and Death Valley was at the top of the list. The websites did not disappoint. Artist’s Palette, the gorgeous peak painted in a rainbow of rock colors? Check! Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, glistening with salt and not so lifeless as one might think…check! How about my favorite moment…jouncing along the precarious trail through Titus Canyon? Check! Would all of these incomparable locations be suitable for a six book suspense series? Roger that!

It’s ironic that I felt so welcomed by such an inhospitable locale. Visiting is one thing, but it takes a certain rugged breed of individuals to live in such a hostile climate. What fodder for fiction! I simply could not wait to get home and start creating the Duke family. And you know what? When this pandemic is over, Death Valley is the first place I want to return…in the fall, of course! Do you have a place near and dear to your heart? What’s first on your travel list after the world opens up again?

My Experience with Haiti

Prior to the 2010 catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that caused immense damage to the country of Haiti, many people would not have been able to tell you that Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola just a two hour flight from Miami.

I knew where it was because our family had adopted a child from Haiti in 1997. At the time the earthquake took place, my husband and I were in the process of adopting twins from a different orphanage in Port au Prince Haiti. It had been over three years and our adoption was not yet complete. During those three years I visited the twins at the orphanage five times. Other family members went with me on some of those trips, and at one point, all of our children still living at home went to visit the orphanage.

This was an eye opening experience for my family. In fact, I volunteered us to do the daily wash. That meant hand washing clothes and sheets for 135 orphans using large metal tubs and harsh soap, then rinsing the clothes in other tubs before hand wringing them and hanging them on clotheslines. Once home, my children no longer complained about unloading the dryer!

Cooking was done in large pots over open fires and mainly consisted of rice and beans, or red sauce over rice. The cooks originally prepared the food in a wooden shack, but more than once one of them would get so hot she’d pass out, so an outdoor area was set up for food preparation.

After the earthquake, there was a mountain of paperwork to be done to get refugee status for children in the orphanages who had families waiting for them. Finally the children were brought to the United States, although some of the orphans went to other countries too, to be united with their forever families. Sadly, many were held in the airport for days before being released. For our family, the long wait was over January 25, 2010. Now our family is complete with three birth children and five adopted children, three of whom are from Haiti.

Some of the places mentioned in the book resemble real places in Haiti, although they have been fictionalized. I hope you will not only read Catching Hope, but will also take time to learn more about the country of Haiti.

Mindy Houng’s Q&A with Kathy

1. What does success as an author look like to you?

If one reader receives hope and healing from the story, my book is a success.

2. Which character did you connect to best in this book?

Lexi with her need for belonging and hope.

3. Which part of the book was the most difficult to write?

One thing that was hard was making the book authentic, but not wanting to show Haiti in a bad light. There are a lot of kidnappings. Our adoption facilitator and another orphanage worker were kidnapped near the beginning of our adoption process. It happens. But I didn’t want to make it sound like Haiti is a horrible place. It’s not. But it has those who are honest and upright and those who aren’t like in most places.

4. What inspired this book?

The idea of writing a book set in Haiti began back in 2007 when we visited an orphanage to meet twins we were planning to adopt. I knew it would involve a kidnapping, but I knew it had to be more than that. I needed a main character who was struggling with many of the same things today’s teens struggle with. In Lexi’s case, she struggle with acceptance, fitting in, and having hope for a better future.

5. Which author influenced the you most?

James Scott Bell. I reread Write Your Novel from the Middle and Plot and Structure quite often, especially when starting a new project.

6. What is your favorite Bible verse or life verse?

I really like the key verse for this book, I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 NLT. My other favorite is Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

7. What is your vacation spot?

There are several places I like for different reasons. If I want to hang out with my whole family, we head to Bryson City to white water raft, tube and cook using fire pits. But sometimes I just want to see something. Like ever since reading Robert McCloskey’s picture book Make Way for Ducklings I wanted to see the bronze statues of his fictional ducks in Boston park. So I flew to NYC (one of my favorite places to go), rented a car and drove to Boston where I had my photo taken by the ducks.

8. What are you reading right now?

Engaged in Trouble by Jenny B Jones. It’s a clean suspense/mystery read.

9. Describe your view as you’re sitting in your writing chair.

Light turquoise walls are decorated with a beach theme. It’s a very energetic, yet relaxing, room.

10. If you could have one book or piece of art or music on a deserted island, what would it be and why?

Can I take the whole Mary Higgins Clark collection?

When I sit down to write a novel, I sometimes have little more than a title or a single scene in my head. For Facing the Dawn, I had a mental picture of a woman who felt like circumstances had drained all the “color” out of her life, as if she were a piece of fabric that had been left out in the sun too long. Faded. Threadbare. Bleached out.

Where was I supposed to go from there? What would have made her feel like that? (Oh, I could imagine, but I needed to know THIS character’s story.) I visualized her called in the principal’s office at her kids’ school, not knowing which of the three was in trouble this time. But it was her. The ridiculousness of it all was almost enough to push her over the edge. Ever been there?

For Mara in the story, a long string of disappointments clogged her life like a backed-up sink (which she also had). Then true tragedy struck. And again. But I couldn’t leave her in that place.

When I wrote the last few words of the story, my heart was full. Tears fell on the pages—or the keyboard. And I reflected back on all the symbolism in the story that actually revealed bits of hope embedded in its fabric.

I’m excited to see how readers respond when they discover those little bits—a cardinal in a stand of birch trees, an oil painting with unusual brushstrokes, a papered wall, a cup of soup, a long-forgotten song, an envelope of ashes…

A story comes to life when readers dive in. I’m looking forward to hearing what they find when they do.

What I think you should know:

Delia and the Drifter is a Historical Western Romance. It is the first in the Westward to Home series by Melody Carlson.  It is set in June of 1884 and follows Delia as she leaves the comforts of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania for the wilds of Colorado.

What I think about this book:

 What an amazing start to a series, Mystery, Murder and Suspense with a touch of Romance. I am a sucker for Westerns and books with strong female leads. I LOVED this book. Delia wanted more out of life than to be married off to a rich older man and she was willing to take risk to get there. I love how Delia was a strong and confident young woman and how Carlson allowed her to be a college graduate, but not a helpless shelter woman. She had the spunk that she needed to carry her through great tragedy and trials. Wyatt was also a great character, I enjoyed getting to know him. Carlson does a wonderful job of creating characters that are both realistic and captivating and setting the scene for a story that will keep you on your toes. The story ended way too soon for me, I hope that we will get to see some of the background characters in future books in the series.

I love historical stories about women. Particularly ones in the American frontier and old west. Probably because I grew up hearing pioneer stories from my grandparents, whose parents arrived in covered wagons. But contributions made by pioneering females is often overshadowed by their male counterparts. That’s why I enjoy researching and telling these fictional yet reality-based stories of women who lived and loved and did their part to settle the frontier. To me they are the unsung heroes of the West.

What I think you should know:

Sing in the Sunlight is a historical fiction by Kathleen Denly, it is the second book in the  Chaparral Hearts series, this book briefly mentions the characters from the first book in the series, but it does not impact this story. I would however recommend the first book in the series as it was a great adventure!

What you might need to know:

Clarinda was attacked by a dog when she was a child leaving her with scars.

Native Americans are not treated with respect by some people in the book.

What I think about this book:

Denly has written a beautiful book about realizing that you God loves you no matter what value man puts in you, that God uses circumstances for His good even if you as man it does not make sense to us.  Clarinda feels abandoned by God and has long allowed her worth to be diminished by her accident, it is heartbreaking how she cut herself off from the world.  Richard feels drawn to her and wants to help her to open herself up to the world and most of all to God.  However the story is not all about Richard and Clarinda, it features life on a western ranch and dangers that could surround them. Denly created a story that captured my heart and imagination.  I really enjoyed this book and hope that there are more in the series.

Hiding our Flaws

We all have things we’d like to change about our physical appearance. Personally, I’ve yet to lose the weight I gained with my last pregnancy and sitting behind a desk all day hasn’t helped things any. Despite this, I know that my husband, kids, family, friends, and most importantly, God, loves me just as much now as when I was my healthiest self. I want to lose the weight not because I need to earn someone’s approval but because I know I’ll feel better and be able to do more without tiring as quickly if I do. In the meantime, I’m okay with where I am because it’s the best I’ve been able to do so far.

This level of self-acceptance has come with maturity and the love of a godly man. When I was younger, I’d spend hours in front of the mirror trying to disguise my flaws beneath layers of makeup and stomach smoothers. In fact, one of the most memorable moments of my courtship with my now husband was the day I returned from a women’s retreat. I hadn’t gotten much sleep all weekend and we’d had to pack up and leave early, so I’d made the unusual decision to skip my makeup that morning. I was going to carpool back to the church, grab my car, and head home for a nap. What was the point in painting my face when the only people who’d see it were the women who’d seen me wake up bare-faced that morning anyway? Well, it turns out my now husband had missed me. So he was waiting in the church parking lot when we arrived, just to say hi before I went home. Sweet, right? Um yeah. At the time, part of me thought it was sweet, but more of me wanted to melt into the floor’s carpet and vanish from sight. I had ZERO makeup on, people! And I had bags under my eyes! *gasp* *shudder*

Needless to say, after almost nineteen years of marriage, he’s seen me a few times without my makeup on. Actually, these days, I only wear makeup for videos, photographs I intend to share online, special events, and (if the kids are nice to me that morning) church. Not that I don’t have my insecure moments or those photographs that friends share but I really wish they wouldn’t. (You know who you are.) But overall, I am okay with how I look because I know that I am loved and accepted.

However, in Sing in the Sunlight, my character, Clarinda, feels unloved, and unwanted by those closest to her. She describes parts of herself with words like hideous. She uses long sleeves, high necks, gloves, and veils to hide herself from a world that has rejected her. And she keeps almost everyone at arm’s length—especially God. So when she finally lets someone in, only to be betrayed, it sets off a series of desperate decisions that tangle her in a web from which she cannot find an escape. It’s my prayer that her story will touch readers’ hearts and show them how much they are loved—flaws and all.

What I think you should know:

 Winning Miss Winthrop by Carolyn Miller is a Christian Regency Romance. It is set in 1816 England and is the first book in the Regency Brides: A Promise of Hope series. It does contain some characters from Miller’s Legacy of Grace series and give updates on them, if you have not read the series you *might* want to read them as they were great books (Start with The Elusive Miss Ellison)

What I think about this story:

 While the plot isn’t extremely original I really enjoyed this book and the details put into it. Miller does a wonderful job of describing the settings. Catherine was a character that I immediately wanted to have a happy ending. She was gracious in the face of tragedy, I love that she tried to find ways to cope with her reduced status and still held herself to higher standards. Jonathan was a very compelling character. There were many times in the book that I wanted to just make Catherine and Jonathan communicate with each other. The gossips in this book ,like in real life, only made problems worse. I love Miller’s style of writing and how she weaves Faith naturally into the story. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

In 2015 I was fortunate enough to visit England and see my sister who was living there at the time. What followed was three weeks of visiting parts of England, Ireland and Scotland in a whistle-stop tour of some of the places I’d long dreamed about visiting, but never thought I’d get the chance: London, Brighton, the Blarney stone in an Irish castle, Chatsworth in the Peak District, Loch Ness and Culloden in the Scottish Highlands, the gorgeous grounds of Dunrobin Castle, and the beautiful Cotswolds of England, which includes World Heritage-listed Bath.

I’ve used many of the places I’ve visited as inspiration behind my historical stories, but none as much as the places I visited while in Bath. Pretty much every place I visited – Sydney Gardens, Bath Abbey, the Pump Room, The Assembly Rooms and more – were mentioned in my story Winning Miss Winthrop, which I view as my homage to Jane Austen’s Persuasion, which vies with Pride and Prejudice as my favorite Austen novel.

I loved my all-too-brief time in Bath, and I love this story, with its depiction of two people learning to overcome the misunderstandings of the past in order to find a future. Winning Miss Winthrop is the first book in the Regency Brides: A Promise of Hope series, and has the attention to period detail, romance, banter, and faith threads that readers in the Regency Brides series have come to expect. I hope readers enjoy Catherine and Jon’s story.

I love Regency romances! I started reading them when I was 13 years old and haven’t stopped since.

There’s something about the Regency time period and culture that’s glamorous and decadent and the epitome of elegance. The resplendent dresses! The brooding, romantic Lord Byron and the distinguished Beau Brummell! Dashing naval captains and army lieutenants, glittering ballrooms and winsome debutantes!

The flip side of my personality loves romantic suspense and action adventure. I love seeing strong women face danger with courage and smarts, and strong men willing to do anything to protect their loved ones and fight for justice.

So, basically, the Lady Wynwood’s Spies series grew out of my desire to see Mission: Impossible in the Regency era!

My Regency “IMF” team is brought together when my spinster heroine, a botanist and a skilled archer, discovers that her late uncle had ties to a mysterious group. She goes to her aunt’s best friend, a gentleman who has secretly been a spy for decades, and he forms his team of ex-agents and uniquely gifted civilians to battle this group of alchemists who want to ensure that Napoleon wins the war with England. (Cue the Mission: Impossible theme music!)

I’ve also structured the series a little differently. It’s a very long serial novel, similar to a Japanese manga or light novel series, with 12 volumes that each have a completed story arc, but the main plot isn’t resolved until the end.

Some things just float your boat, you know? What are some of yours? I’m thinking, for many of you, having piles of awesome newly released novels to read is one of those things. Do you remember what it was that you loved to do more than anything else… when you were a kid? Well, for me, at least, it hasn’t changed much. I remember being in third grade and KNOWING that I was meant to write books. But having ADD in the 80’s and feeling like I was a pretty lousy student through most of my school years sort of put my dreams of being a published author in the category of “pipe dream”. Then during my senior year of college, I had one glorious spring break week of creative thinking, and I came up with the name of the heroine I would (hopefully) write someday—Amaryllis Brigham. And I also came up with the last name of the hero, and the family I would write a series about—the Everstones.

Five years after I graduated from college, I got married. And because I had lots of extra time at that point, I decided to check out some books about character development from the library. Which was the first clue to my husband that I wanted to write a novel. Yes, I hadn’t even told him! Then another five years went by while I worked full time at a daycare. I had definitely thought more about writing it by then, but I didn’t really know how to start.

But then I did. At the age of 32, during January 2010, I finally started writing The Hesitant Heiress. I just dove in, half planned and half one-chapter-at-a-time. I love history so much, when I’m doing research the world as it was just comes to life in my imagination and the story possibilities are endless! And really, I wrote Nathan and Amaryllis’s story for myself—for the joy of writing! Creating story, I found, was my favorite hobby beyond reading them! I did have a dream once during the two year process of writing THH, and I very vaguely saw a cover face out on a shelf. But again, to me it seemed like an impossibility, and I just kept focused on the joy I attained from writing it. If you would have told me back then that that first novel I loved writing would be traditionally published and on the market two and a half years after I finished writing it, I would have laughed in your face! And then, when I first saw Amaryllis on the cover of that first book in my series of five… I thought back to the dream I had that one time, and she was it. The way Amaryllis Brigham is situated on the cover of my published novel was very similar to the vague book cover of my dream. God had done it; He had taken the biggest desire of my life, given me a dream even when I was too cautious to hope, and He had made it a possibility.

Tanya Stowe knows how to set the atmosphere for fast-paced, intense suspense and her newest offering is no exception. Dulcie, a social worker and counselor for victims of domestic violence, is being targeted for meddling in the wrong people’s affairs. She’s stubborn, tenacious, and passionate about her work but her past prevents her from getting too close to anyone. Austin is a grieving deputy who’s poured everything he has into his work so that he doesn’t have to face his broken heart and empty home. Surrounded by reservation land and people bent on evil ways, Dulcie and Austin must work together to unravel the mystery behind the missing women while trying to stay one step ahead of those hunting them down. I enjoyed learning about the Navajo culture and their way of life. Austin’s second chance at love is sweet though fraught with danger. Austin and Dulcie’s faith journey is realistic and heartfelt.

When my children were very young, my husband and I took a trip to Colorado for a family reunion. After the reunion we traveled through Colorado to see the sights. We stopped in Silverton and my sister and I took my young son and daughter down the narrow-gauge railroad to Durango. Riding the swaying train down slopes covered in pine trees with the rushing white water of the Animas River below, I knew I’d write about the area someday. Many years later my husband and I took our first “kid-less” vacation in our motorhome. We stayed in a campground on the Navajo Nation next to Canyon de Chelly. We had no running water or electricity and that night, a storm blew in from the west. We watched the sky change to hues of purple and pink and then sat mesmerized as lightning strikes crossed the magnificent valley. Once again, I planted the scenes in my mind, determined to write about them one day. Little did I know both vacations would combine into one story. Jeff Grenell is a nationally recognized youth ministry veteran who inspires youth leaders across denominations.

After four decades in youth leadership, Jeff and his late wife, Jane, founded ythology to both reach and teach youth and train youth leaders to prepare the next generations to lead in the church and the world.
He served as a youth pastor at churches in Michigan and Ohio, taught at North Central University’s Church Leadership School, and has traveled around the world to teach youth ministry and development at large churches, conventions, universities, and leadership training conferences.

Jeff attended Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri, where he received his B.A. in Communications and Theology and his M.A. in Organizational Leadership.

Only 25 percent of Gen Z sees attending church as “very important.” Encourage their interest in sex. Check. Cause the breakdown of the old moral virtues like honesty, sobriety, and self-restraint. Check.

We could go on through each of these prophetic statements from Lenin in 1921 and see why America is where it is today.

XYZ

Just look at the title of the book. This project is a compilation of the sexuality handoff from Generation X (the adult parents of young people today), to Generation Y (the Millennials), and finally to Generation Z (teenagers and early twenty-somethings). We can learn a lot from this generational handoff—mostly that it has failed to pass the Christian faith along to the following generation.

The narrative throughout this book is a clear picture of how we have gotten here as a nation: by abandoning God as the center of our lives in the past few generations. And while we will do some commentary about Generation X and their influence upon our society, most of this study is about the Generation Y/Millennial and the Generation Z young people in America.
