Overview

When Heather Toulson returns to her parents’ cottage in the English countryside, she uncovers long-hidden secrets about her family history and stumbles onto the truth about a sixty-year-old murder.

Libby, a free spirit who can’t be tamed by her parents, finds solace with her neighbor Oliver, the son of Lord Croft of Ladenbrooke Manor. Libby finds herself pregnant and alone when her father kicks her out and Oliver mysteriously drowns in a nearby river. Though theories spread across the English countryside, no one is ever held responsible for Oliver’s death.

Sixty years later, Heather Toulson, returning to her family’s cottage in the shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor, is filled with mixed emotions. She’s mourning her father’s passing but can’t let go of the anger and resentment over their strained relationship. Adding to her confusion, Heather has an uneasy reunion with her first love, all while sorting through her family’s belongings left behind in the cottage. What she uncovers will change everything she thought she knew about her family’s history.

Award-winning author Melanie Dobson seamlessly weaves the past and present together, fluidly unraveling the decades-old mystery and reveals how the characters are connected in shocking ways.

Set in a charming world of thatched cottages, lush gardens, and lovely summer evenings, this romantic and historical mystery brings to light the secrets and heartaches that have divided a family for generations.

My Two Cents

Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor is a fast-paced book about love, forgiveness, and the harm that secrets can bring to a family.  The storyline goes seamlessly between past and present which allows the story to unfold in a way that makes you want to keep reading. I was drawn in from the beginning and could not put the book down.  I wanted to find out the secrets and what happened to each of the characters.

This book has everything you want in a story: Love, mystery, secrets, surprises, struggle, tension, and hope. As a teacher, I could tell that Melanie had done research on Autism and what it looked like for families who had a special needs child before they had diagnosis. She also shows the real-life struggle of parents in which society does not understand their child and thinks you are not a good parent.

Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor is an extremely well-written book with well-developed characters. There is much we can learn through the relationships of the characters of the book.  Melanie’s display of the hurt that is caused by molding people into what we want them to be, not how God made them to be is evident throughout the book. The hurt caused by forgiveness and the regret we have at the end of our lives reminds the reader to think about our actions each and every day.

I give Shadows of Ladenbrooke Manor 5 out of 5 stars. This book will keep you captivated from the very beginning.

New High Score! New Record Time!

Rick nodded with grim satisfaction. He laid the game controller aside on the sofa and reached for his crutches.

Rick Dial was the best quarterback Putnam Hills High School had ever seen. Unflappable. Unstoppable. Number 12. But when a car accident left him crippled, Rick’s life as he knew it ended. He disavowed his triumphant past. He ignored his girlfriend. He disappeared into his bedroom—and into the glowing video screen.

But Rick’s uncanny gaming skills have attracted attention. Dangerous attention. Government agents have uncovered a potentially devastating cyber-threat: a Russian genius has created a digital reality called the Realm, from which he can enter, control, and disrupt American computer systems . . . from transportation to defense. The agents want Rick, quick-thinking quarterback and gaming master, to enter the Realm and stop the madman—before he sends America into chaos.

Entering the Realm will give Rick what he thought he’d never have again: a body as strong and fast as it was before the accident. But this is no game, there are no extra lives, and what happens to Rick in the Realm happens to Rick’s body in reality.

Even after Rick agrees to help, he can’t shake the sense that he’s being kept in the dark. Why would a government agency act so aggressively? Can anyone inside the Realm be trusted? How many others have entered before him . . . and failed to return?

In the tradition of Ender’s Game and The Matrix, MindWar is a complex thriller about a seemingly ordinary teenager who discovers a hidden gift—a gift that could make him a hero . . . or cost him everything.

My Two Cents

MindWar focused on themes of family, faith, and hope. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the characters in this novel evolve as the plot unfolded. The main character, Rick, shows reader how important it is to never give up, though he had to learn this lesson the hard way. Despite the danger it brought to his own life, he did tried with all his might to save those he calls friends.

The focus shift between the good guys and the bad guys made the storyline easier to follow. Although this book started off slowly, it picked up towards the end of the novel.  Overall, this book had an interesting concept and was a good read.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.  I give it this rating only because it took some time for the story to pick up. This book had great characters that can teach us important lessons.

Overview

For so long, Stella was known for her beauty. Now, with her heart stripped bare, she must discover who she really is.

Former pageant queen Stella Varland doesn’t trust beauty anymore after her divorce. Her appearance betrayed her and led to brokenness, so instead of being beautiful, now she tries to make beautiful things, but she always falls short. So she keeps her passion for art to herself and focuses on her interior design work. But if she doesn’t get another job soon, she’ll be stuck living with her parents.

Contractor Chase Taylor is determined to live a life of no regrets after losing his fiancée. Now he lives life at full speed, striving to see how much he can accomplish. He knows if he slows down, he’ll fall apart. So he returns home to Bayou Bend to renovate the town’s old theater and is shocked to discover that the designer for the project is his old flame, Stella.

Forced to work together, Chase and Stella battle their chemistry and past as they struggle to compromise and work together on a vision for the theater. Their wills clash as they attempt to hide their brokenness—and their unresolved feelings for each other-until Chase discovers the hidden parts of Stella, while losing her trust in the process.

A near catastrophe, a fire, and a small-town gossip mill finally force Stella and Chase to realize that they have a choice—to hold on to the shards of their pasts, or surrender their fragmented pieces to the One who makes a beautiful masterpiece from their brokenness.

My Two Cents

I love the name of this book Love Arrives in Pieces. It’s story is a reminder that wounds can be healed and brokenness can be mended.  With a style of writing that is unique to Betsy, she weaves a story of encouragement and hope for those who have been shattered by life.  This imagery is amazing; the beauty of what God can do shines through.

The characters in this book have much depth.  The wisdom shared through the character of Dixie is something that the reader can apply to their own life. Dixie is homeless yet adds so much to people’s lives. Many times people walk by a homeless person and think they have nothing to give. I loved the reminder that we are all loved by God and we should take no one for granted.

Love Arrives in Pieces is raw and deals with issues so many of us deal with in our everyday lives. The reader can take so much away from this book to apply to their own lives.  Encouragement, hope and love will work their way into your heart with this excellently written novel.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.  A definite must to add to your TBR pile.

An Interview with Molly Jebber

Today I am very excited to be featuring an interview with Molly Jebber! Be sure to enter the giveaway at the end of the interview.

mollypicture

What started you on your writing journey?

My childhood imaginary friends, Bugs and Debbie. As an only child before my brother was born, Bugs was my little companion who got the blame for all the things I did wrong, and Debbie got all the credit for the things I did good. Mom laughed at my imaginary friends. Dad was a little worried about me. They were relieved when Bugs and Debbie went by the wayside when my brother, Mitch was born!  With my imagination, my friends and family encouraged me to write, and I’ve always wanted to.

What distracts you from writing the easiest?

My husband, Ed, suggesting we go to dinner or a movie. My daughter, Misty or my friends wanting me to go to lunch for a good gab session, movie, swimming or beach. Eyeing a really good book on my nightstand and picking it up to read a few pages, and then not being able to put it down.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading? (Book recommendations very welcome!)

Devotional, Romance and Mysteries – I loved “Breathing on Her Own” by Rebecca Waters

Which character in your new release most interested you while you wrote? Why?

Becca – She’s kind, but speaks her mind. She’s got a large birthmark on her hand, but she doesn’t let it define her. She loves God and appreciates her Amish upbringing, but she struggles with how to react when she’s faced with difficult people and harrowing situations.

What is your favorite season of the year?

Summer! I’m happier when I can see my toes and have sunshine on me!

What do you like most about the area where you live and/or grew up?

Springboro, Ohio. It was a small town. Everybody knew each other. My brother and I had lots of children our age who lived on our street. My daughter, Misty, was also raised there, but it grew by leaps and bounds before she graduated from high school. We loved the festivals, history, school spirit, local church, and candy store! The family who bought our house years ago still have my playhouse in their backyard.  It’s been painted and is leaning a little, but I tear up every time I drive by it and remember my dad building it out of scrap lumber. He passed a few years ago.

Has some place you have traveled inspired something in your writing?

I love visiting Amish towns and learning from them. They inspire me with their strong belief in God and focus on Him. I find their way of life fascinating. I enjoy shopping in their stores and seeing their handiwork. The quilts and other dry goods are beautiful.

When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?

My next book is part of an anthology titled, “The Christmas Sleigh” with Amy Lillard and Kelly Long. My story is “An Unexpected Christmas Blessing”.

As much as Charity Lantz’s children need a father, the young widow isn’t sure her new neighbor Luke Fisher can ever be the right choice. She’s drawn to him, but they’re having more disagreements and misunderstandings than snowflakes in December. Will God show them a way past their conflicts to a forever love?

“CHANGE OF HEART” is the first book of a three book Keepsake Pocket Quilt theme series.

“An Amish Christmas Sleigh” a separate Christmas story in an anthology with Amy Lillard and Kelly Long stories will be released October, 2015.

“GRACE’S FORGIVENESS” is the second book in the series and it will be released February, 2016.

My Two Cents

It is always fun to find a new author. Especially an author who writes not only Amish fiction but in the historical contexts. Molly Jebber does a wonderful keeping to the Amish culture. It is obvious to the reader she has done her research on the culture of the Amish during this time period.

Change of Heart is a refreshing take on Amish fiction because the storyline and setting are so different from the typical Amish genre.  The characters are very different but written well.  The idea of pocket quilts was fascinating to me and their use in the story makes it quite endearing.  The relationships between the character are encouraging. The bonds between Becca and her sister are strong and even shunning has not been able to separate them. Their support for each other help to remind us what family is all about.

I give Change of Heart 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. This is a sweet story that will captivate you from beginning to end.

Overview

Researcher Kate Adams has finally pinpointed the medicinal plant responsible for tearing her family apart. She’s certain that discovering its secrets is her only hope of solving the mystery surrounding the disappearance of her father. Kate will risk anything to find the truth–even her budding relationship with Detective Tom Parker. But more people than she can fathom are after the plants and going it alone just might prove to be a fatal mistake.

My Two Cents

Desperate Measures is a thrilling novel with several twists and turns along the way. This novel is the third in the Port Aster series, yet I was easily able to follow the story line without reading the two prior novels. The characters were interesting and relatable; it was easy to find myself in their shoes as I continued reading the novel. I enjoyed watching the relationship between Kate and Tom unfold as the novel went on. Kate’s love for her father was inspiring. Even though her father had put her through a lot, she still loved him and fought to be able to see him again. Desperate Measures deals with themes of love, trust, and faith in God.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.  It was a joy to read and kept me interested throughout the entire length of the novel.

Summer’s List Review

Summer’s List by Anita Higman is a 288 page novel in the Contemporary Romance genre. It is published by River North Publishers and was released on June 1, 2015.  To purchase your copy, click here.

summers list

Overview

A dying wish alters the course of a young woman’s life.

Life hadn’t been easy for Summer Snow. In acts of selflessness—caring for her ailing parents and running her grandmother’s bookstore—she had forfeited her youth and dreams for the needs of others. And the only tries she had at love . . . didn’t turn out. She had the bookstore, she had her beloved granny, but she was missing something—or someone.

Opportunity strikes when Granny sends Summer on an unexpected adventure with one Martin Langtree, a kind but gangly young man from Summer’s past. A childhood friendship is rekindled, a romance is sparked, and mysteries are solved in one magical Texas summer. Will Summer strike out on love again, or will things finally go her way?

My Two Cents

Summer’s List is a wonderful, fast-paced novel with a moving storyline. Two characters set out on a journey to complete a list given to Summer by her grandmother.  This journey changes the them, reveals the past to them, and gives them hope for the future.

The characters in Summer’s List are interesting and well-developed.  The love shown between Summer and her grandmother is very touching and reminds you to cherish every moment you have with your loved ones.  Martin Langtree has a difficult relationship with his brothers – whom I wanted to strangle at certain points in this book.  Martin loves his brothers and wants to show them what true love, what God’s love, looks like. It was encouraging to see the sacrifice tempered with accountability that Martin gave to his brothers to show them God’s love. This made me reflect on my relationships and how I can better show Christ to others.

The themes of love, forgiveness, hope, and faith in God are all reflected in Summer’s List. It reminded me of the joy of reconciliation and to never lose hope in the Lord. I was surprised to find a bit of mystery added in. This, along with the tension, kept the book moving at a fast pace. I read it in one sitting!

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.  It was a joy to read and best of all, I gained encouragement from reading it.

As Waters Gone By by Cynthia Ruchti is a 304 page novel in the contemporary Christian fiction genre.  It is published by Abingdon Press and was released on May, 5 2015.  To purchase your copy, click here.

as waters gone by

Overview

How can a marriage survive when separated by hundreds of miles and impenetrable prison walls?

Emmalyn and Max Ross may have to endure the fight of their lives to mend the tattered fabric of their marriage. His actions ensured she could never be a mother and put him in prison, giving their relationship a court-mandated five-year time-out. On a self-imposed exile to beautiful but remote Madeline Island, one of the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior, Emmalyn has just a few months left to figure out if and how they can ever be a couple again.

Nudged along by the exuberant owner of the Wild Iris Inn and Café, a circle of misfit people in their small town, and a young girl who desperately needs someone to love her, Emmalyn restores an island cottage that could become a home and begins to restore her heart by learning what it means to love unconditionally. Yet even as hope begins to find a place within the cottage walls, Emmalyn still wonders if she’s ready for Max’s release. She may be able to rebuild a cottage, but can she rebuild a marriage?

My Two Cents

As Waters Gone By is a wonderful book filled with Biblical hope! Set in the backdrop of a beautiful setting, Cynthia creates a story of faith and finding joy even in difficult circumstances. It is hard to put into words the encouragement I felt as I read this book; it lifted my heart. As Waters Gone By makes you want to believe in second chances and the hope for redemption. It reminds you of who God is – of His mercy and grace but most of all His faithfulness to his children.

Cynthia’s writing is different from other authors I have read.  She paints a descriptive picture of emotions with the setting; the reader feels the words written on the page.  It felt as though I was right there beside Emmalyn getting a glimpse into her heartache and redemption. The other characters are well-developed as well. The theme of true friendship is very apparent in this story.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.  As Waters Gone By is a story that will stay with you and keep you reflecting for a long time after you put it down. It is a must read.

Hearts Made whole Review

Hearts Made Whole by Jody Hedlund is a 383 page novel in the Christian historical fiction genre.  It is the second book in the Beacons of Hope series but can be read as a stand alone. Hearts Made Whole is published by Bethany House Publishers and was released on June 2. To purchase your copy, click here.

hearts made whole

Overview

Can she forgive the hurting man who costs her the role she loves?

After her father’s death, Caroline Taylor has grown confident running the Windmill Point Lighthouse. But in 1865 Michigan, women aren’t supposed to have such roles, so it’s only a matter of time before the lighthouse inspector appoints a new keeper—even though Caroline has nowhere else to go and no other job available to her.

Ryan Chambers is a Civil War veteran still haunted by the horrors of battle. He’s secured the position of lighthouse keeper mostly for the isolation—the chance to hide from his past is appealing. He’s not expecting the current keeper to be a feisty and beautiful woman who’s angry with him for taking her job and for his inability to properly run the light. When his failings endanger others, he and Caroline realize he’s in no shape to run the lighthouse, but he’s unwilling to let anyone close enough to help. Caroline feels drawn to this wounded soul, but with both of them relying on that single position, can they look past their loss to a future filled with hope…and possibly love?

My Two Cents

I was immediately drawn into Hearts Made Whole and was easily able to connect to the characters.  Jody paints a picture of a beautiful setting in historical Massachusetts and the life of a lighthouse keeper.  The story she weaves exposes the plight of women and the difficult choices they faced during this era.  Jody also exposes the harsh realities of war veterans trying to assimilate back into everyday life and the scars they carry.

Jody creates very strong, well-developed characters in Hearts Made Whole. Caroline is a strong woman who is taking care of her siblings after they were orphaned. During an age where women struggled for equality, she struggles to keep her job, provide a roof over their heads, and be both mother and father to her siblings. Caroline faces tough choices but handles them with love and grace.

Hearts Made Whole has a storyline that is gripping.  Jody uses her characters to unfold mystery, jealousy, and tenacity.  She also uses those characters to inspire trust in the Lord, love, forgiveness and second chances. Some characters you can not help but love while others you make you so mad you want to scream.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.  Hearts Made Whole is a story that fills your heart and gives you a wonderful reminder of how important it is to trust in the Lord.
