Chapter One

A Disastrous Journey

Stefan’s sleepy eyes flew open when the train’s unexpected jolt propelled him from his seat. He sailed across the compartment and into the waiting lap of his sister, Julia, who sat across from him. The high-pitched shriek of the brakes hurt his ears as he scrambled to return to his place. “Sorry,” he mumbled.

Julia giggled. “Watch where you’re going,” she said, her eyes dancing with laughter.

The train lurched to a stop.

Hugo, who had been in a deep sleep, slid to the floor. “What happened?” He blinked several times and looked around the compartment, still in a daze, before climbing back into his chair.

“Nothing good,” Stefan growled and glanced out the window. “We’ve stopped in the middle of nowhere.” All he could see were corn and grain fields stretching to the horizon. The European countryside, so quaint and exciting when they left Warsaw, now elicited nothing but boredom.

The train sat motionless while the minutes ticked by so slowly Stefan lost track of time. He slumped in his seat. This is the worst. He ran his fingers through his shaggy, light-brown hair. He hadn’t had a haircut for almost a year, and his unruly mane covered his neck and threatened to reach his shoulders soon.

About the Author

Carol’s passion is to write exciting stories that encourage, inspire, and boost the reader’s faith, possibly because she has always felt like an outsider. She was born in North Africa to American parents and grew up in France. At age 15, her family’s abrupt move to Philadelphia resulted in a rough transition to American life.

After graduating from Penn State, Carol joined the Army in search of adventure. She was stationed in exotic—for her—locations like California, Arizona, and Texas.

Since then, Carol has lived in Krakow, Poland, where she teaches English and organizes language camps. She also writes a blog on faith-related topics.

Carol enjoys watching or reading a good murder mystery and getting nervous while watching NFL games.
