Why I Wrote How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month
By Susan U. Neal, RN, MBA, MHS

When I first became an author, I had no idea how much marketing it would take to get my book into readers’ hands. Like many writers, I thought my job ended when I typed “The End.” But I quickly realized that if I truly wanted to reach people with the message God gave me, I needed to learn how to market that message effectively.

Over the years, I discovered what actually works. My book 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates has sold over 30,000 copies. In 2022, I reached a personal milestone: my overall Amazon author rank was 4,400. That placed me in the top 1 percent of all Amazon authors. As an award-winning, best-selling author and certified writer coach, I’ve gained a great deal of insight into what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to book marketing. And I wanted to share those marketing secrets with you.

That’s why I wrote How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month. I want to equip Christian authors with the tools and strategies they need—not only to sell more books but to fulfill their divine calling. This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about spreading the message God gave you and watching Him multiply its impact.

Interview with the Author

What inspired this book?

What inspired me to write How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month was the countless Christian authors I’ve met who had written powerful, God-given messages—but struggled to get those books into readers’ hands. After learning how to successfully market and sell over 40,000 copies of my own books, I felt called to share practical strategies that worked for me.

I enjoy marketing, and with a master’s in business administration, I’ve learned how to take ideas and turn them into action. I especially love using those skills to help fellow authors share the message God has placed on their hearts. This book is my way of equipping other authors with the tools, encouragement, and step-by-step guidance they need to fulfill their ministry and reach the audience God intended for their message.

Which chapter was the most difficult to write?

Chapter 2: Define Your Ministry and Audience was the most difficult chapter to write. When writing a book I work with a developmental editor. I send her several chapters to edit while I write the following couple of chapters. After she read my first four chapters, she found that I needed to more clearly define how an author determines their audience.

A common mistake many authors make is writing their book to everyone. When this occurs, the book will struggle to find its market and not sell well. Instead a writer needs to define who they are writing their book to. Here is an excerpt from chapter 2: “When you clearly define your target reader, you can effectively connect with them. If you don’t, few will buy your book. You need to market it to your precise readership for maximum discoverability.”

What is your favorite Bible verse or life verse? What does success as an author look like to you?

Ephesians 3:20 (NLT) Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

In 2016 when I published my first book, Scripture Yoga Ephesians 3:20 was my verse. And I have been astounded by my writing career in the past nine years. God has given me two missions. The first was to inspire others to improve their health so they can serve God better.

As a registered nurse with a master’s degree in health science, I’m passionate about helping others make informed choices about their health. Through my writing I wanted to decrease the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics 42 percent of Americans suffered from obesity and 50 percent have a chronic disease. To me, success as an author means seeing a decrease in this CDC statistic because people are reading and applying the principles from my healthy living books.

In 2020 God gave me a new mission: to help authors get their God-given message into the hands
of more readers through the associations, Christian Indie Publishing Association (CIPA), the Christian Authors Network (CAN), the Christian Indie Awards, and the CAN Marketing Awards. Through these organizations, I help Christian authors publish professionally, market effectively, and expand their reach to fulfill their God-given calling. And now I am the new director of Blue Lake Christian Writers Conference. I can make a greater impact for the kingdom of God by helping authors successfully market their books than by publishing just one book of my own each year.

I didn’t set out to acquire any of these organizations—instead, God opened doors I never expected. Stepping into the role of CEO was intimidating, but I moved forward in faith, trusting that He would equip me for the task. And He did. In fact, within the first year, the CIPA membership doubled in size. It’s been a powerful reminder that when God leads, He also provides the strength and success to follow.

Now, with my book How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month, I put the tools, strategies, and knowledge I’ve gained into the hands of other authors who feel called to share their God-given message. This book is more than just a guide to marketing—it’s a practical resource built on real-life experience that walks authors through the steps to expand their reach, grow their audience, and fulfill their ministry through publishing. Whether you’re just starting out or trying to boost sales on your tenth book, this resource equips you with actionable steps to sell more books and steward your divine calling with excellence.

What would you like your readers to get out of this book?

First, I do not want authors to get overwhelmed by the multitude of decisions and tasks, but to see their writing careers as a journey with the Lord. It is not a short race but a long one. You can’t do everything at once. Just as you keep raising your child after they are born, you need to continue marketing your book years after its release. How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month guides you through your uncertainties, offering direction and support as you further your calling.

Why write nonfiction?

I want to help readers learn and improve their lives and well-being. That is why I write personal growth books. I do the research; readers receive the benefits of that research. For example, I have over 200 scientific research articles cited in 12 Ways to Age Gracefully.

I credit my minimal graying hair color to taking mineral supplements because a National Institute of Health study concluded, “Premature graying may be an indicator that hair is not getting enough nutrients and minerals, and supplementation with these trace elements might reverse and is expected to prevent progression.” This is just one secret I share in this book based on science. I love science—whether it’s used to improve someone’s well-being or to identify the best keywords so readers can easily discover a book.
