DAY 1 The Broken Pieces

The Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13-21) is considered a miracle because Jesus feeds so many with so little. I have heard many sermons on this; Jesus can take the little we give (as the child gave a small portion of loaves and fish to Jesus) and turn it into an abundant blessing. Sometimes this is preached to help people give money to the church or volunteer their time. “If you just give a little bit, God will multiply it!”  I have sat through countless sermons like this and even preached some myself.

Yet what often gets ignored in this story is that the disciples do not realize how abundant the feeding is, until they gather together the broken pieces that are left over. Twelve baskets full! One basket for each of the disciples, who each represent one of the twelve tribes of Israel originally chosen by God. The account in Exodus (16:14-18) of the Israelites in the wilderness being fed by God with manna from heaven runs parallel to Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000.

About the Author

It’s great being a Chaplain at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, working with our Veterans in addictions and mental health!  Hearing their courageous stories of faith inspires me to write about the healing, transforming power of Christ in whatever ways I can.  I think kids have a special knack for tuning into that spiritual reality that brings hope and meaning to our lives.  I had so much fun updating the Joona Trilogy and making it work for a new generation!  There is so much to write about when it comes to God, who may not always be understandable but who is always desirable.

   I am married to a clinical psychologist husband who works out of Burlpres church in Burlingame CA.  We like to fish, play tennis, go to the ocean with our golden retriever and golden doodle, and sail.  Our three grown kids are nearby and we enjoy spending time with them too!  I am a Princeton Seminary graduate and a Boston University School of Theology Doctoral nerd.  I think that is all except I love it when people read what I write and comment.  So please do!
