Jamie Beth O’Rourke—Jamie to everyone except her parents—snapped the latches on her violin case, the familiar clicks punctuating the end of rehearsal. The music room still held that distinctive smell of rosin dust mixed with the lemon polish Ms. Givens insisted on using. Her mind lingered on the cute cellist, Owen Moretti.

Did he already have a prom date? Would he ask her? But when she imagined Dad’s reaction, she sighed. He’d probably send agents to Owen’s house, dig up his entire family’s history, and scare the poor guy off.

“Hey.” Elena Cabot, another violinist and her new BFF, tilted her head toward Ms. Givens.

“Listen up,” the choir director called. “Good rehearsal today. Concert’s in ten days, so we’ve got time. Practice at home. Next rehearsal is Tuesday, the last one before dress rehearsal on Thursday. See you then. Good job, everyone.”

The students all trooped out to the main entrance of Sacred Heart Prep. Jamie pushed through the glass doors beneath the red-domed rotunda, the Sacred Heart crest visible overhead.

The sun was still bright, reflecting off the cars in the front parking lot. The circular landscaped area in front featured a statue of Jesus with outstretched arms.
