Isaiah 1
The Message from God
Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.
Isaiah 1:18
Heaven and earth witnessed the original covenant ceremony with Moses (Deut. 4:26), and now Isaiah calls on them to witness that God’s people have broken its terms (Isa. 1:2). The covenant is the standard by which Judah and Israel will be judged. Speaking with the authority of God, Isaiah lists Yahweh’s grievances against His people. Judah is ungrateful (vv. 2–3), corrupt (v. 4), comes to sacrifices with blood on her hands (v. 15), and prostitutes herself by going after other gods (v. 21). God has had enough.
Judah, however, is hurt and doesn’t know it. She is oblivious to her condition and unconcerned about how God feels. Though angry, God offers her a way out. “Come now, let us settle the matter,” He says. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (v. 18). She doesn’t listen and so hastens her demise. The devastation of Jerusalem Isaiah envisions in verses 21–31 won’t happen in his lifetime, but it is coming.
Sin numbs us to our wounds and makes prostitutes of us all.
