In Nero’s Rome, Calandra helps her father, a renowned sculptor, complete the most significant commission of his illustrious career. But then a catastrophic fire nearly destroys the imperial city, leaving Calandra reliant on a group of Christians-—unusual individuals unlike any she has encountered before. Intrigued by their worship of the Son of an invisible God, Calandra grapples with her mistrust, only to find herself indebted to these believers as they help her rebuild her shattered world.
When Emperor Nero begins constructing his opulent Golden House, the people of Rome grow resentful, suspecting him of starting the fire in order to clear the land for his immense palace. Needing a scapegoat, Nero points at those who follow the Jewish Messiah, forcing Calandra to make an impossible choice between right and wrong, friends and family, love and death.

“Because I also knew we had debts.” A wry grin lifted the corner of his mouth. “And even though Cronus may say the statue does not adequately represent him, his pride will not allow him to refuse payment for a work that portrays him as more handsome than he is. So we will eat until we run out of sestertii, then we will find another patrician who wishes to see himself immortalized.”
“That should not be a problem,” I said, wiping my brush on an oiled rag. “The Forum is filled with them.”
I dipped my finger into a pot of blue paint, then rubbed the precious mixture on my skin to test the consistency. Few statues bore any trace of the gorgeous color, for few native Romans had blue eyes or wore blue clothing. In any crowd of patricians or senators, white was the predominant color, accented by the reddish purple so well loved by the upper class.
But blue was the color of the sea, and so rare I yearned to use it. “What if I gave him a blue ring?” I asked. “Though you did not sculpt a ring on his finger, I could paint a gold band with a blue stone.”
Father exhaled a slow breath. “Better, I think, to paint blue stones on his sandals. One thing is certain—no other senator will have a statue like this one.”
“Then Cronus will love it,” I said, dipping my brush into the color. “Because I have never seen a senator who is content to remain equal to his peers.”
