Chapter 1
The sweet scents of autumn permeated Ellie’s nostrils as she waited for her school bus. It was unusually warm outside for the dim hour, though the sun was now beginning to kiss the horizon with its balmy red glow. Soon, the radiant orb would fully crest above the eastward track of road, creating a byway leading to illumination on her right and darkness on her left. Standing between this battlefront of darkness and day, the gentle breeze spurred Ellie’s olfactory attentiveness westward. It harbored fragrant notes of ornamental fruit, flowering goldenrod, and crisp grasses, mixed with fresh dew.
